I'm no expert but I prefer not to use the slide lock either as every slide lock position is slightly different from gun to gun. Sometimes shooting different pistols require your thumb to hunt around for it. Practice racking your the top of your slide w/ your other hand instead.

What if I only have one free hand because the other hand is busy killing zombies with my AK-47! If I'm going into combat...I'm going into combat fully loaded!

I just use my thumb.

adaptation for the win!

I don't rack my slide like a dumb **** either.. i cup the top of the slide w/ my thumbs towards my chest like im stabbing myself. Some guys crack me up when I see them pinch the slide w/ the thumbs and index finger to rack the slide. The gun is all over the place trying to get back into position.

It's good practice.

Now what if you think you're out of ammo but you actually have a FTE or FTF.. what good is your thumb slide release going to do for you? Do you think you think it's wise to take that extra time to assess the failure then correct it? That's why I practice racking the slide.. DUH!!!!!!

Slamming the mag home to try and create inertia is one of the worst things you can do as it is very easy to dislodge the first round and create loading issues.
FACT is that many competition shooters file back the internal (mag actuated) slide lock lug so that the mag does not engage the slide stop. Although this has the disadvantage of no slide lock on empty mag, it means that chances of dislodged round in a quick reload are reduced. The open slide issue is overcome with a more prominent, aftermarket loaded chamber indicator.
