Is it normal to have to slam it?

I attended an action shoot on Sunday. One of the rules is if you are not on the line, the gun must stay holstered. So in order to reload you must pop the magazine out, recharge it and then put it back in.

Normally at the range I put a new mag in with the slide open, but in this case I can't really do that.

My second trip to the line I pulled my XD9SC from the holster and all I got was click. It seems that when installing the loaded magazine with the slide closed, it does not engage and fully lock in.

I have since tried this a few times at home and it appears that I have to slam the magazine in when the slide is closed and the striker is not cocked. I have not tried to slam it in when the striker is cocked, I'm afraid it will damage something.

Is this normal? Can I insert a fresh mag witht he slide closed and striker cocked? Should it need to be slammed in? My Kel Tec isn't like that.

With the slide closed it may be necessary to insert a loaded mag with a robust tap or slam. If you are using factory mags or aftermarket mags made to OEM specs there should be no ill effects.

Just the force of the bullets agianst the bottom of the chamber.

They don't ask you to load and make ready at the line.

We can carry holstered and "hot". Cannot unholster a loaded or unloaded gun while off the line unless you get a range officer to come to the burm with you and watch you do it.

What I ended up doing is walking off to side and pulling the trigger in the holster to release the striker (after pulling it out a bit to see the indicator) and then placing a mag in then racking the slide with it slightly out of the holster but not totally. I recently got a Kydex holster from uncle mikes that should work a little better since the holster I was using wasn't really for the XD.

I still don't quite get this I have been to sevral cold ranges.
So why even have a loaded mag before you get to the line?
You still can't chamber the round till you get to the line?
Just trying to understand the benifit of this hot condition 2?
With my 1911 I go to the line two mags in pouch and 1 in each rear pocket for Idpa and then the one goes in to chamber the first round then I switch two the other re holster and then shoot threw.
xd I go to line 4 mags loaded to ten one in pocket with 11 remove load and make ready chamber round reholster for the start signal

The only place I had to do the, load a gun while in the holster, was at a shooting class. But we did have one in the chamber so you could top off while off line this way.

I always had a round chambered going up to the line. The reason I have to load a mag and rack in the holster was because I only have the 2 ten round mags right now and I am usually spent when I am done.

I can testify to the fact that slamming them in does not cause any problems. I started off on a 1911, and the mags of course almost never go in if you don't slam them. So ever since, I have slammed all of them from the bottom with the palm of my hand. In fact some mags for the 1911 include a "slam pad", which is just extra plastic on the bottom of the mag to slam your palm against.

My mags were REALLY tough to lock into place with the slide closed. I took my slide apart and shaved a 1/16" off the bottom of the follower. That reduced the pressure enough that I can lock in a mag without serious effort and has no ill effects on feeding rounds.

another thing you can try is leave you mags fully loaded for awhile, let the spring wear out a little. those brand new ten rounder springfield mags are a bit tight.

As far as they slamming, no problem at all. I just attended a class that i carried hot and had to do admin reloads (changing the magazine while the gun is holstered). it was tough putting a full one in, but i just went ahead and slammed it in. No ill affects on the gun, in fact if this action hurt the gun i would not buy it or trust it with my life.
