Thanks for the reply. I don't mind paying a "little" extra because where I bought it is only 5 minutes from my house. I'd like to support them. I have seen the same identical gun selling for $699 + tax at Gander Mountain which is 40 minutes from my house.
Where did you buy from?

Very true. And it probably has a lot to do with your location. There's no sales tax here in Oregon so that could definitely play a part.

SA started putting the 4.5 on the slide when they released the 3.8 model. The only other difference may be in the slide serrations. The original model were straight and the newer M's have more of a 'V' shape.
I would not say the striker retainer pin is a weak point. Yes, there are reports of some breaking, but nothing is indestructible. Things will break or wear out over time and need to be replaced. I just had to replace the firing pin in my AR because it broke and the magazine springs for my S&W pistol because they were weak. These are wear items that see a good amount of stress. Do tires on your car last forever? How about the watch on your wrist, ever had a pin break in the band?

I understand your point and I agree. I did read that the rolled pin only failed after many dry fires or heavy use, but I have also read that there is a replacement pin that is a stronger version of the original that isn't as prone to failure/wear. The price of the replacement pin was around $6. I was curious if the newer model may have had an improvement.

The upgrade is not from SA. It's an aftermarket part. Powder River sells a 3 pack for $30. It's a different type of pin and will hold up better if you feel you need it. The factory pin is a slit roll pin (very common in lots of firearms). Basically, it's a metal tube with a slit down it to allow it to compress when forced in the hole. The ones PRP sells are a spring roll pin which makes them stronger because they are coiled giving the multiple layers. Keep in mind, this can still wear out.

Thanks for the explanation! I think I will keep an eye on the stock roll pin and upgrade as needed.
Do you have anything to add on the locking block issue other than what I already posted? I appreciate the replies thus far.

I've not heard of any changes to the locking block. I did see a recent posting on here about someone with a chip out of the block in the are where the barrel locks into it. If I recall, they were sending it to SA, but I know nothing further then that.

My old XDM9 said just that. My new one says that plus NRA handgun of the year. Regardless I think they are all the same.
