I had a bail bondsman who suggested that if you have to shoot someone drugged up with a lot of 9mm you were trying to kill the bg, fewer big bullets you were defending, in court. I rented both of them, but I didn't like the accuracy of the 3" barrel. I got a XD 45 compact 4", but my buddy with a SR9C that is an awsome shooting little gun. Oh, I was surprised at how smooth the 40 sc was. Personally I'd wait to see what this new XDM compact is going to be that S/A is coming out with soon. There have been several vague ads lately, but we don't know the caliber yet.

Can't they make the argument that using a bigger bullet also meant you wanted to kill the BG? Not only that but you where cheap to empty your mag?

I like them both for different reasons.
That is why I bought both, in Tactical, Service, and SC. I would not trade any of them.
Serious though, How much shooting are you planning on doing, go put 100 rounds in 1 day through each gun, and then come tell us what you feel.
I am sure you will come up with a decision after shooting them.

If you are foolish enough to say you were intending to kill them, rather than stop them. Additionally, if it is bullet size that is meant to show intent, you may as well get a .25 cal and hope for the best.

Cheaper ammo
Less recoil
And as far as the XDsc, the XD9sc has a higher capacity 13 +1 vs XD40sc 9 + 1 in the short mag.
I carried an XD9sc for a couple years..
No problems..

+1 cheaper in the long run... and wlcome...

there are a few things you have to look at...
1 have you shoot different calibers?
2 will you be practicing and if so how much?
3 will you be reloading?
basic three questions to which will help you realize what works best for ya...
I love em all...

Got the xd9 service. For me cost of ammo was a big factor. I like going to the range as much as possible and saving 2-3 dollars a box on ammo adds up over time. Also with +p rated hollow points you'll have plenty of stoppng power in a self defense situation. 9mm ammo is always available too.

To be honest with you...I want one of every XD/XD(M) gun in every caliber! Of course, I don't have the money or the lifespan left to reach this goal but anyways, the point I am making is that if you want the .40 & have the cash...get it! You know it will not be the last pistol you'll ever buy so why fret about this one? Buy it, shoot it...then buy a 9mm 3-6 mos. down the road...then you have both! Next, a .45...I can see it now....You'll be lovin' life...yeah....

I have both, an XDM in 9mm that I use mainly for competition and an XDsc .40 that I carry. Both great guns! I chose the 40 for my personal defense gun just to have a little more bang, but the 9mm would certainly do the job if needed.. The 9mm was easier to learn on and I shot over 5000 rounds through it before getting my .40. I say get the one you shoot the best, then get another, and another........
