As others have noted you will be most of the way to a second gun if you trade yours and buy a conversion kit, so maybe you should think about keeping 9 for economy and capacity, then save for a 45.
I plan to keep my 9s and get a 45. I want 1911, just can't make up my my mind which one A suggestion for you would be XD45 if you want to stay with all XDs.

This is what most shooters do. Keep the 9 and get a 45. The 40 will never do what the 9 or 45 can do. WHen I want 45 'power' I carry my 45. When I want 9mm penetration and capacity I carry the 9mm. The 40 will never do the 9mms job and comes nowhere near doing what the 45 can do. The 40s heaviest bullet can not even get going as fast as the 45s lightest and the 40 has 30%~ more pressure . More pressure for less performance. No thankyou.......

I personally find the 9mm more controlable in rapid fire than 40...even more dramatic in small SC pistols. You can't miss fast enough to win a fight.
I own only 9mm and 45 pistols...no need for a 40 IMHO.
The 40 is a good round and I would not want to be hit with any of them, but I will take the SCs 14 rounds of 9mm, load it with quality SD ammo and smile!

How about getting another 9mm? Try an XD tactical for range time, the XDsc for carry.
Or try another platform such as Glock, S&W, Beretta, HK, Sig or what tickles your fancy. You'll be getting a different feel with different platforms.
But then if you consider a 1911, well then .45 is the caliber of choice.

Keep the 9mm and go for the the 45acp.
With the 9mm it's cheap to shoot. The 45 is fun to shoot.
If the 9mm dosen't convince a BG to leave the 45 will make him leave.
If you go with a1911, then you have the added beneffit of a club( when your out of ammo) plus the 1911 you can make your own, customize.
