im not gonna read all the posts on this before commenting so here goes. you should be ashamed of yourself. not because of the fact you shot yourself but because the bullet fired could have very well injured someone else. its obvious you dont have the necessary skills at the moment to be in posession of a deadly weapon. i for one would recommend a few classes before you even touch one again. i certainly wouldnt trust you with one around me. you dont get second chances with accidental firings. do yourself a favor and give it away or sell it before you hurt somebody else. im sorry if this sounds rude or abusive but you really screwed up and hopefully you will learn from your mistakes before touching it again.

FYI - heres a rule even my 10 year old can understand - you dont play with guns. they are always loaded - even when they are unloaded.

PS - hope your feeling better - really.

Crazy story, glad you're alive. A reminder to all that it takes a half second to make a mistake you can't take back.

Good luck with recovery.

NEVER SCREW WITH A GUN WHEN YOU'RE SLEEPY! I unfortunately was paying more attention to the pin than whether or not there was a magazine in the gun. I racked the slide slowly one time, held the gun parallel to my body, then pulled the trigger. The gun fired a round and a bullet went through my left index finger knuckle.
first, hope you heal and get full function back.

now here is my critic, you said you were going to "dry fire" the gun, not sure if anyone else has commented on this, but when I dry fire, it is exactly how I fire the gun when loaded. Proper grip, sight alignment, site picture (at something I would not mind distroying, not that I plan to), aware of what is behind the target I am aiming at, and a slow squeeze of the trigger, and follow through, trigger reset etc....

If you are dry firing without doing all the steps correctly you are training in bad habbits, and you are missing an opportunity to do it correctly.

IF you dry fire this way, you should not ever suffer the way you did.....and you will be training the way you should.

again get better and get some training, remember even pro's in every sport have coaches and are always looking for more training.

oh, and one more training exercise that would have totally saved you, everytime you pick up a gun, check its status, even if you put if down and it is right where you left it, check its status, if you do this everytime, it will be habbit and save you from the risk of handling a loaded gun when you think it is unloaded, and holstering an unloaded gun when you think it is loaded, both can be deadly.

Glad you're alright! If it makes you feel any better, nearly an identical set of circumstances let to a close friend doing nearly the same with with an XD .45. He was up all night, picked up his new XD, spent all day shooting it, was sitting at home, drinking a beer. Started the process of removing the slide to clean his gun, and neglected to clear it. Put the round through the palm of his left hand, through the couch, and through a window. Fortunately it didn't seriously injure him, and no one else was hurt. His middle finger on that hand is the same length as his ring finger now. Another guy who grew up around guns, always had a bunch of them, and still does. Again, very glad you're alright and hope you retain full use of your hand.

PS - Is it too soon to interject some humor into this situation? Because if it isn't... I believe a vote is needed to change the OP's forum name to "Shooter"

hahahaha humor is good medicine for the wounded

One question... Where did the bullet end up? In a piece of furniture? In a Wall? Through the Wall into another room?

As a teen (in the 60s) my friend & I were cleaning our revolvers in the kitchen. He had reloaded and saw some smudges on the cylinder. Rather than unloading and wiping, he held his thumb on the hammer and cycled the cylinder. (You can see where this is going.)
Bullet missed him, grazed his pants, went through the Kitchen wall into my closet, into a dresser drawer, into a bag of TV Tubes (yes... TVs used things called Tubes in the 60s) and lodged into the base of a vacuum tube.
He made the slug into a pendant.

Here's to a speedy recovery to both your hand AND your wits.
Thanks, for the response!

the bullet went through the wall, out the cedar siding on our house, ricocheted off the driveway, and into a tree trunk. Thank god there was nothing in it's path.

Mountaineer, thanks for the gutsy post. It's definitely a lesson for us all. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Insatiable, do you intend to destroy your TV? I can't believe you'd quote the rule, then in the next sentence recommend violating it. Dry firing should be done at a specific target, set up for the purpose. It can be as simple as a sticky note, but it should be mounted on a safe backstop (like a block wall), and removed when practice ends. A casual approach to dry firing leads to threads like this one.

I don't care that he's black. I hate him because he's Red.

The guy who thinks he's the smartest one in the room never is.

The important thing is that you understand it happens to everybody; it's not a question of if, but when, and you were smart enough not to be point it at somebody (excluding your hand) when you dry fired.
