First, glad you weren't hurt worse although I'm sure it seems bad enough to you. Heal quickly and stay strong.
May not be entirely parallel but an interesting comparison is the fact that MOST rider caused motorcycle accidents occur in the first 500 miles a new owner rides it EVEN IF HE IS FAMILIAR WITH OTHER BIKES.
I remember in the service, disassembling and re assembling (field stripping, taking apart the trigger housing group, etc.) my weapons so many times I thought my fingers would bleed. BUT when we finished I could do it in the dark, sleepy or not.
It is why we train to make motor responses automatic. It is when the safety drills pay off. Of course, very experienced shooters can short circuit and accidents happen but your best defense is practice and discipline.
IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE so minimize the chances.

Most, if not all of us, have had a ND. I was just fortunate enough that it didn't hit anything important.
And if you think you're careful now, what till that hand heals and you'll be ten times more paranoid about your handling. When I dry fire, I almost check every time I pull the trigger, even though no magazine is in the room and my previous trigger pull resulted in a 'click.'

While I can appreciate the empathy implied in this statement for the OP, I don't think this is true and really hope it is not! That kind of statistic , which I think is just anecdotal and NOT based on any real facts, gives the anti gun nuts too much ammunition for limiting our rights, IMHO.

On the bright side. I imagine the number of people who actually get shot is pretty low. Kinda of like lightning strikes. So your odds of ever having to go through this again is like 1,000,000 to 1.

As long as this painfull lesson sets in it will probably be your last. Having a visible reminder of what happens when you get careless can be a powerfull teaching tool to yourself and others. I strongly recomend getting yourself enrolled in a NRA firearms instructor course so you can share your experience with others. There are more people out there like you than most will admit and most are unwilling to share their experience. Heal Well

My empathetic statement was indeed anecdotal and was not intended to be taken as statistical.

Glad you are not more seriously injured, and thanks for the not-so-subtle safety reminder!

You sound like you are doing well. While you are recovering, I suggest picking up a copy of "On Combat" by LtCol. Dave Grossman with Loren Christiansen.
Whether you have seen it this way or not, you have been involved in a shooting. Since you are new to pistols, It's important that you deal with the incident to minimize any long-term, negative effects that may hinder your progress as a pistol shooter...
