Question XD40SC Bullet Gashes

Hello all,

I've been reading this forum off and on for a while as I'm a fan of Springfield. I currently have an xdm-40 and the xd40sc.

I'm having a problem with my XD40SC and I'm wondering if its something I've done or something I need to contact Springfield for.

When a round is racked its taking a small gash out of the tip of the bullet. I first noticed something was wrong with 2 rounds jammed at the range, and as we all know that's unheard-of with Springfield. I got home, promptly cleaned the gun and attempted to rack both personal protection rounds and target rounds. All of them we getting gashes taken out of the bullet. Here's a link to some target rounds showing the damage to the bullet.

My question is, what am I doing wrong, because lets be honest, its a Springfield and it must be something I'm doing. =D

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried different mags? Sometimes one of the mags will have the lips open too much thus presenting the round a bit too high.

I've just have the two that came with the gun and both appear to have the problem. I can sure try closing them up a bit.

Do you have any snap caps. I would like to have you try something but it's safer if you have snap caps.
First mark you mags #1 and #2, you can use tape at the bottom of the mag for this.
With one round loaded in mag #1 slowly cycle the slide while looking down into the mag/chamber area (not the barrel) try to see where the round is hitting the barrel. This will tells us if you might need to try opening or closing the mag lips.

You can also try taking the slide off and inspecting the breach and extractor area for rough spots that might make your round hang up as it's being loaded. If the case head gets stuck as it's being grabbed by the extract it might cause the round to stay pointed in an upward angle. Check the feed ramp for rough spots. Let me know what you see.

I tried bending the lips in and it appears to have reduced the gouges, but not stopped it from happening.

I do not have any snap caps, but did try to take a look in chamber as I cycled it and I didn't notice anything in particular.

The barrel ramp seems smooth, but I'm not exactly sure what I would even be looking for except jagged edges.

Should I take it to a gunsmith or simply give Springfield a call?
