XD .40 Subcompact fits 10 rounds in magazine?
I have an XD40 Subcompact which I have been very happy with. I noticed I can get 10 rounds in the magazine which comes with it, though the capacity is listed as 9 rounds. Is there any risk of carrying that 10th round? Thanks for the help.

My XD9 service would do the same (17 in a 16 round mag) I think it would be ok to load up 10 then chamber a round and carry it 9+1.... with it at 10 it could cause issues with the spring rate etc.

That gives no advantage of the extra round in the mag. I believe the OP was asking because he's thinking about carrying 10+1. To that end, I'd run at least 10 mags through it before I'd call it reliable with 10+1.

So far I haven't been able to figure out how to get that +1 round in the chamber. So by loading 10 in the magazine, i could rack the slide to get the round in.
I presume I am not doing something simple, how does one get that extra round in the chamber? Sorry for such a stupid question, but this is my first handgun.

The mag is designed to carry 9 load 10 in it insert it rack the slide and you are all set to carry 9+1.... if you want to carry 10+1 do the above then drop the mag and load one more into it.....I would not do this as the mag has enough room for 9 rounds the base plate, spring and follower... by loading the extra round something has to give and in this case it would be the spring.

mine runs fine with 10 in the mag. but I had to shave my follower a bit to get number 10 in.
to get the extra round in insert loaded mag, rack a round in to the chamber, remove mag and insert a mag loaded to capacity.
some people will drop a round in to the chamber by hand and drop the slide. don't do this, it's hard on the extractor because it's slamming into the round then forced to jump over the rim. they aren't designed for that and it can cause premature failure.
