I asked a couple local shops and they all said snap caps were recommended. I would like to know how fragile, too.

Snap caps are a good idea for dry fire practice, which would be repeated use. If you are just doing a funtion check, dont worry about it. If you are sitting in the basement watching television and killing all the BGs on CSPAN, put one in.

As I am always looking for my "next" 1911, I keep one in my truck to take into the gunshops. No better way to get a feel for a trigger than pulling it, and we dont want to offend the keepers of the kingdom. My 2 cents, anyway.

In the XD specifically I've heard of guys wearing out/breaking the roll pin that retains the firing pin. Of course the guy I'm thinking of dryfired his XD something like 10,000 or 15,000 times before it broke.

I always use a snap cap just to be on the safe side.

I keep a clip with a few in for trigger drills and FTpractice.
Highly recommended.
