Hello. I have a .45 XD service w/thumb safety. Love it. It was getting hard finding ammo, so I had an opportunity to get an XD 40. I don't seem to shoot as good with the 40. Same stance and everything. The 45 did not recoil (to me) drastically different from the 40. I say this because I talked to a gun dealer and he said I was anticipating the recoil of the 45 while shooting the 40. I am not really buying it, but I'd like to get some feedback. Is it possible I need to tweak the sights on the 40? I bought both guns new.

All things being equal, I prefer the 45. If I become a Sheriff's deputy (hopefully) I'd have the 45 by my side.

If the gun dealer hasn't seen you shoot he isn't qualified to make such an "over the counter" diagnosis like that.

Welcome to the forum nogeektx..........

I'd take a 9mm or a 45ACP over a 40cal any day..
In my experience with 40s, owning one and shooting many,
the 40cal recoil has too much muzzle flip (up).
The 45 has a nice smooth push back recoil.
A lot of guys here love their 40s, but I never have cared much for the round as a whole...
And to all the naysayers that want to flame me for my opinion, don't bother.
It is, MY opinion, and it has been that way for several years.

As far as the gun dealers advice, it would more sense the other way around.
I can almost see the anticipation of the 40 shooting a 45, almost.

Perhaps you should have bought an XD9 over the XD40...
9mm is getting much more plentiful around here than any other caliber.
And I do love my nines.........

I do not care for the .40 at all. I bought one when no other ammo was available and all the cop shops had tons of 40, but sold it soon as other ammo came back to the store shelves. The .40 has a snap to it that the 9mm (no recoil) or the .45acp (a push, no recoil) does not have. I don't care about bullet size, energy or whatever, to me shot placement is the MOST IMPORTANT thing and with a 9mm or .45acp, I will hit what I aim at and be able to have the 2nd or 3rd back on target quicker due to less muzzle snap. XD has well proven you can make a .45acp that fits the hand of a lot of folks...Glock has not learned that yet.

+1, got 2, 9mm and 3, 45. Love them and never shot a 40 that I cared for.

I have no issues with my .40--I have heard about all this muzzle flip business, I guess I must not notice it. I bang the middle of my 7-10 yd targets all the day long with my Glock 27. Ammo is always available, cheaper than the .45, and the G slides nicely into my supertuck for summer fun.

I am just the opposite. I had an XD 9mm and bought a 40. I liked the 40 so much I sold my 9 to my son-in law.

If you are anticipating any recoil, regardless of caliber, you would shoot them both equally poorly, including your .45. The few times I've shot .40, I found it wildly inaccurate (SIG 229). No other round has been that inaccurate for me, regardless of platform, so I always figured the round was less than stellar in accuracy. Could have been the bullets, though.

How do you shoot with the 40 that's different? Do you have tight groups that are off, are all of your shots off the same way (low left, low, low right, etc...), what are the specifics of the difference? Giving more info would give us more to go on.
