Ported barrel vs velocity and accuracy
Last week I got my ported 4" HS 40 V10 and I'm wondering if there's a loss of bullet velocity and accuracy due to the porting. Please enlighten me on this.

In my experience with ported barrels, I find there is a little loss of velocity and a gain in follow-up shot accuracy. Whether it's worth the $$$ to have it done, only the shooter can determine for himself. I have an XD40SC that I'm seriously considering having it done on. The gun isn't that hard to handle, but the porting will make it just a little sweeter.

Velocity degredation shouldn't be too much of a concern. From what I have gathered the biggest potential drawback to ported barrels is in a low light situation where the blast could temporarily blind you and as a result slow down your follow up shots.

It would look cool in the obituary. Died while trying to shoot at a bad guy and was temporarily blinded by his muzzle blast, BUT HE LOOKED REALLY COOL!

I agree.,
I have a couple of ported pistols.,The velocity drop is below 10 % and the follow up is much improved. As for the blinding light .,Ive not had half the problem as many say there would be.Mostly Ive noticed it depends on which loads you choose.
I'd love to get the V-10 set-up done to my XD 45 service, just havent found a good place to get it done.

I've emailed James Nicholas of the XD-HS2000 homepage and he did some actual testing on velocity of the ported vs the regular barrel. His results showed the the velocity drop is only by 40-50fps which is very negligible.
As for the blinding flash at night that many shooters consider as a drawback for ported barrels, I did the testing myself. I fired 5 different rounds for each available brand that I could get my hands on, and trust me on this, the flash is negligible compared to the non-ported, almost the same.

Try this link: YouTube - Ported S&W J frame test
It's a ported J-frame SW, I'm just not sure if it's a 442, or any similar model with a less than 2in barrel.
