One of my favorite books.

Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals - In-depth coverage of the technical, physical, and mental aspects of practical pistol training and competition. by Brian Enos

Just remember to adjust your hold from what many of the online videos show (assorted pistol brands) to accommodate the specific design characteristics of the XD/XDm. Basically this means keeping any 'thumbs forward' grip from contacting the slide lock lever. Even light contact that you may not notice during recoil can cause slide and ammo feed malfunctions.
With the XDM, make sure you try all the grip backstrap sizes. The one that you may think should fit due to your hand size, may not be the best for your natural point of aim.
Find some of the shooting correction adjustment targets available on this site or others, that help diagnose improper grip and trigger control problems.
After shooting a few hundred rounds with the stock pistol, you may decide to try a trigger travel and reset reduction kit. Available through several site sponsors.
Look for a local club that offers a basic shooting course. Try to observe the class to see if it fits with what you want to learn before you sign up. Learn it right from the start, rather than developing bad habits that then have to be broken before you can do it correctly.
Get lots of range time and have fun.

Dry fire has been the best thing for me to improve my accuracy.

I couldn't agree more!! Get some snap caps and dry fire as much as you can.

Also make sure your feet are solid too. Basically get comfortable and lean a little foward with your weight on the front of your foot with your knees bent a little. Get your grip and trigger controll down and then practice at the range. Like everything it will take time and practice to get good at it.

Oh and have fun too

Go to United States Practical Shooting Association and use the club finder on the right side of the screen to put in your zipcode and find a club... Attend a match... Ask questions... Learn infinite knowledge...

Don't have the mentality of "oh I'm not good enough to be in a competition". When people first start in USPSA they're there to learn... and there will be plenty of people willing to help you with anything you need to learn.
