partial racking during dry firing

I have a rather unusual question with my hs/xd. I found that the striker would get cocked with the slide going back only partially. Now, this is my concern. Is this a problem? since I only have a single snap cap (snap caps down here cost 8-10 US$ each), I'd rather not eject the bullet, load it to a mag and reload it. Am I doing anything wrong by partially racking the pistol to cock the stricker while a snap cap is in place in the tube? Maybe i'm causing the extractor some stress? Will a partial cocking be like a 'second strike' with real bullets?

I bought 5 .45 ACP snap caps from Cabella's for $15

The "partial cocking" is perfectly normal, and what people here will generally recommend.

I have five snap caps, but I generally have four in the mag, one in the chamber, and then I just pull the slide back enough to cock the gun and keep using the same chambered snap cap.

Otherwise, ten minutes of dry-firing is nine minutes of loading and one minute of actual trigger-pulling.

My XD striker resets with only an inch or so of movement. It doesn't take much at all.

Yes this is fine. People do this with real bullets as well when they perform a 'pressure check'.

I think it's a "PRESS" check? You pull, or press from the front, the slide back just far enough to visually verify a round is in the chamber. Probably started with 1911's? No real need for this on an XD unless your indicator on top is busted.

Thanks....I learned it as "chamber check" although it is obviously the same thing. I still do a manual chamber check as necessary since I've no guarantee that I'll always have an XD in my hand.....keeping a standard manual of arms makes it easier for me.

Thanks again!

i live in a country with stupid firearm laws and a small firearms market, meaning the prices are jacked up a lot. Normally 2 to 3 times what midway is selling stuff.

thanks for the info guys

The guy's right I think it's press check. I think I heard pressure when you actually feel for the round. Anyways this is something you don't neccessarily need to do with the XD since it has the chamber indicator. Do a normal grip with a pistol in the right hand (or left hand if left-handed), then bring the left hand underneath the muzzle and use your fingers to grip the slide, push it back a little and use your right index finger to touch the exposed round. You could just look at it but this would also be for low light situations.
