Trouble removing extractor from XD .45 (tactical)
After watching these informative videos I have been taking apart my XD, mostly out of curiosity, and also in case it needs some simple repair (like the roll pin breaking, which I've read occurs sometimes).
It's been very worthwhile and educational. I've had no major difficulty dis- and re-assembling the gun..._except_ the extractor. I tried prying with a pick (as shown here), and also pounding with a mallet after reading about it. Not sure I did it right, but in any event the extractor didn't budge. I have no real need to remove the extractor but I'd still like to know how it's done (short of drilling it out & replacing it). Thanks. |

I have successfully used the technique shown in those videos to remove the extractor on one of my XDs, but on the other it just wouldn't budge. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you are having a problem with the extractor.
My advice in this case is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There are a few techniques. In the videos posted above he uses a pick (like a dental pick) to get it started loose, and then you can just turn the slide over give it a good whack. It should drop out...

I know this is a stupid question but have you remove the striker safety and pin?

Answering the above 3 questions...As I said, I don't _need_ to remove the extractor, I just want to out of curiosity. And I did try the pick + slam technique; it just didn't work as my extractor seems to be seated much tighter (and/or I didn't do it properly).
I had removed the striker safety block + pin first, but it's not a stupid question since it's easy to overlook that sequence, particularly the first couple of times! |

Here's what I did. I bent the tip of a small screwdriver into an L shape the used it to pry the extractor off. Just use a side to side movement.

I'd been unable to get the extractor out of my .45; broke a couple picks trying it. The 9mm was fine, but simply couldn't budge the extractor in my .45. That screwdriver idea makes me want to go right home and try this. Agalindo, while there are a lot of people I've learned things from here on XD-Talk, you certainly are in the top 3.
