15 round mags and 16 round mags. Wassup with that?
I recently bought a used XD9 Tactical and it came with two mags which look to be factory and hold 15 rounds, or so they say. I also just bought some mags from a forum member and they are factory and hold 16 rounds.
Why is there a difference? Thanx. Weazel, the XD n00b

I could be wrong.........I usually am. But I kind of remember someone saying on here that the 15 rounders were some of the earlier magazines put out by Springfield for the earlier versions of the XD. The newer ones are 16 rounds.
I am sure someone will be along to correct me. |

Back in the day some users were tweaking 10 round .40 XD mags for use in their XD-9s. Tweaked capacity was something like 13 In the future the "tweaking" practice will probably start again

I believe SA makes the 10 round magazines for New York, Calif. and the like, makes the 15 rounders for States as New Jersey, Maryland and the such, then they make the 16 rounders and above for the Free States.
Just my look at the the issue. |

XD-9 10rd magazine use a solid follower (very similar to the follower the Berretta M-9/92 uses) and a spring with all the same width coils in a magazine tube with dimples to reduce capacity to only allows 10rds.
The original XD-9 15rd magazine used that same follower and spring in a magazine tube that did not have the dimples, thus 15rd capacity. The orginal XD-40 12 rd magazine used a non-dimpled magazine tube with a hollow follower and a spring that had 4 narrow coils at the top that collapsed into the follower. A bunch of XD owners discovered that if you put the XD-40 magazine follower and spring in an XD-9 15rd magazine tube you could get a magazine to hold 16rds of 9mm. Springfield Armory and its supplier finally caught up with these owners and the birth of the 16rd XD-9 magazine happened. They simple put the follower and spring made originally for the XD-40 12rd magazine in a 9mm magazine tube and drilled a witness hole for the 16th round and there you go. rambling mcb |

Wow, that's a lot of info. Thanx!
I took some pics of the two respective magazines and they are quite different. In the first two pics the 15 round magazine is on the left, 16 round on the right. In the last pic I flipped them... Weazel ![]() ![]()

I thought the 15 rounders were the older version.
In America (Not NJ).. more rounds are better. The 15 rounders seem to be getting harder to find.. gotta find the once in awhile auction on gun broker. It really sucks living here that I have to find older, obscure magazines to remain legal. |

I supposed I'd sell my 15 round mags for the cost of replacement 16 round mags (or trade), but either way it really doesn't matter I suppose. All the best. Weazel
