XD .40 Service...How concealable?

Okay, so I have an XD .40 Service model. I have had it for about a year and love it. I am going to get my CCW soon and was wondering about how concealable it is. I am about 5'10", 250 lbs. if that helps. Is it possible for me to carry this concealed or should I trade for a sub-compact? Now, I would love to have both but I am LEO so money is a factor. Lemme know what you guys think?

Since I am in the same boat with the same 40. I would like to add my opinion. The winter time its in my shoulder holster (generic) and I the summer, I use a fanny pak. I am 6'2" @ 240 (trying to loose a little). I have tried different (what I call hip huggers) and I just can't find anything I like. With my current carry method, I have not had a problem... Since I have big hands, I didn't like the SC styles, so I bought the service 40. love it!!

I'm 5'6" and 180lbs, I carry my XD40 service IWB and haven't have any problems concealing it. Alpine Tx can be pretty hot in the summer, I just wear loose Tshirt or Polo type shirt. Dark colors help with printing. If there is a slight bulge noticeable on some tighter shirts people will think it's a cell phone. The wife can't tell when I'm carrying unless she bumps up against my hip or something.

I'm 5'11", 200 lbs & carry my 45 tactical concealed in a Supertuck - no problems at all.

It is possible to conceal the Service, but it is much easier to conceal a SC. Since you already have the Service, stick with it and try it out. That way you will know if it works for you and if not, you can always consider the SC then.

I'm 5'10", 290, and I carry a 45 Service in a Supertuck. I wear one of those moisture-wicking T-shirts tucked in with a loose button-up or polo over it. Haven't been "made" yet.

I have the 9mm service and carry it. I have a holster made by DM Bullard which I love! It is dual clip which makes a difference. I also tried a high noon "tuckable" and thought it was great until I tried the dual clip.

Shirt untucked...I can make it invisable.......

i have a xd40 service (4") that i carry as my daily right now. Im 5'10 and 210-215 depending what i have for lunch that day :P

i carry IWB w/ no holster and have yet to be 'made' yet. I typically wear tshirts and polo shirts, or a tucked in t/ with a button down worn loose. I was at gander mountain tonight looking (and fondling) the p22's and mentioned that i was considering it as a plinker and possible backup weapon.. so he shows me the khar 9mm. I told him i wasnt interested in a 9 really since i have a .40 thats my carry weapon and i didnt want another caliber in my colleciton. He says 'well here.. try and tuck this' 'sorry man.. no can do, would expose my carry weapon, dont wanna get booted from the store' much to his chagrin as he had no idea. This was after i had him remove a xd 40 service so i could do a real side by side size comparison with the p22 for grip and such.

long story short... losing some of the size of the grip for conceal would be handy, but the barrel length is no issue for me. it barely prints.

here's a few pics of my 40 service carried wearing a white shirt so the print shows as heavy as its going to.

hth
