Why SA didn't make a 9sc mag like 40sc
Sorry if this has been discussed, I did a search and didn't see anything. Several people use 40sc mags w/ bent lips in their 9sc. This effectively lets them hold 13 rounds. Now the reason they hold more is they don't have the sides "pinched" in. Now my question is if this works so well (I have not heard of any problems using a 40sc mag w/ properly bent lips) WHY doesn't SA make the 9sc mag like this from the factory? Just a question that has always bothered me, hardly concerns me since I don't own a 9sc... Just curious if anyone has asked SA, or has a answer.

haven't seen a 40sc mag.
maybe it has to do with the 10 round low capacity thing some states have?

I've never heard of that before, sounds interesting though. Any problems encountered with it?

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong:
I have heard of this, but I thought it had more to do with the shape and thickness of the follower than the lips up top (they would have to be bowed out farther in order to compensate for the larger diameter cartridge.) The mags fit in both guns, so the dimensions would be the same. Makes me want to swap followers and mag springs between a 9 and a 40 to see if it affects the capacity. |

It is not due to the lips, but the internal parts. You can swap internals, but I would do extensive testing before I would trust it for CC.

I am sure it has to do with the 10 round limit in some states. If you compare the spring and follower in the 10 round and 16 round mags, the 10 round mag has a much larger spring..... I cut the spring down and trimmed the follower in my 10 round mags and they easily hold 12 rounds now. I have been shooting them for some time with no problems....

I don't know why SA did this but I recall that swapping the external parts from a .40 to 9mm will not up your capacity. If I recall correctly, there are ridges stamped into the mag that stops reduced the capacity in the 9mm sub compact mag. The .40 does not have these ridges.
Can anyone else verify if my memory is correct? |

![]() Here's pics of both, 9s/c on the left and 40s/c on the right. The 9 has a dimple in the bottom side of the mag as the arrow points to and a much longer spring as shown. The follower is completely different also. The external magazine dimensions are the same except for the lips being a little wider at the top. The 9mm spring does not fit into the 40 follower at all and the 40 spring catches on the dimples near the bottom of the 9 mag. While I can put the 40 follower and spring into the 9 mag and was able to fit thirteen 9mm rounds into it, I'm not too sure about using that for CC. I'm more leaning towards jherrin99 and trimming the 9 follower. Just thought I'd try this as a local gun store was selling the SA Gear mags for $19.99. |

The 10 round 40SC mags do not have the vertical indentations on them as the 9MM mags do. The 40SC can be converted to run perfectly in the 9MM SC by just bending the mags lips slightly in. In the factory configuration the 9MM round will sit to high and may pop out do to the lips being to wide. The follower and spring are identical. I have been using 40 mags in my 9 SC for years and have had zero malfunctions.
Why SA has not made 13 round mags available is a mystery to me. The only drawback to using the 40 mags is that the witness holes do not match up with the actual round count. |
