When you do a trade....
Curious....
I have never traded a gun before. Let's say you are doing a face to face with someone, not necessarily a dealer. I am assuming the best practice is to have a permit and record and take it, exchange. How would you record that the serial number now does not belong to you...after all, never know. Just curious...

Print up a bill of sale. Record the buyer's and seller's info (name, address, DL number). Record the pertinent information of the firearm: Make, model, caliber, serial number. Record the amount of the sale and date of sale.
I usually add a paragraph that states something to the effect that the buyer attests he/she can legally own a firearm and is not a felon. File the bill of sale away in a safe place and never destroy it, ever. |

Seems like i read the seller is responsible to make sure buyer is legal to own a gun.... now how Joe Public would do that is the million dollar question. Safest way is to go to a FFL and have them record the transfer and do the background ck.... $20-25 from most FFL's |

I have done plenty of face to face. I always just do a bill of sale, just in case. Be sure to check your state laws before doing it.
Blake.

I don't do a bill of sale since MI requires purchase permits or a CPL in order to purchase a handgun. All the pistol's info is put on there, which is good enough for me. Don't have to worry about the guy not being "qualified", either. Check the permit against his DL, and they're GTG.
