Questions: CA Resident Buying Out-of-State

I'm located in north San Diego County and want to know if buying an XD from an out-of-state dealer would be cost effective. Here are my questions:

1. Is the CA FFL that I use required to collect CA sales tax?
2. Typically, what is the cost to ship?
3. What is a reasonable fee to pay for the transfer/registration?
4. Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced FFL who will process out-of-state purchases?

As for buying here in state, who typically has the best price?

Thanks in advance.

I would think buy the time you pay for shipping, it would out weigh your tax... I would just shop around locally... IMO As far as the fees, I believe that its the same state wide... Some FFL buyers will charge you cost + 10%... if thir nice.

No.

> 2. Typically, what is the cost to ship?

Depends. If coming from an FFL holder, as little as $25. If from a private party, as much as $65.

> 3. What is a reasonable fee to pay for the transfer/registration?

DROS is $35, but it's tough to find someone who will process it without tacking on another $55 to $75 as their fee. Some FFLs even demand 10% of the purchase price as their fee (which hurts when you start talking $1000+ guns).

If you can find a person selling one used, then it is a "face-to-face transfer" (FFT). You have to do the paperwork through a dealer, but the state processing fee is only $18, and the law says the dealer can't charge more than $10 over that. Additionally, the 30-days-between-handgun-purchases law doesn't apply to FFT transfers.

Call your local gun shops and ask what they charge. Also, Gunbroker.com has a database of FFL holders so that you can find one in your area.

Check out Calguns.net's gun sales forum. If you watch it for awhile, I would be surprised if you didn't eventually see an XD pop up for sale in your area.

I thought that CA had passed a law prohibiting you from buying from out of state dealers?

Not correct. They now require out-of-state dealers to enroll in the "California Firearms Licensee Check System" (a process that takes only a little time), and then receive a verification number (30-second process that can be done online) before shipping a gun into the state.

It's more paperwork, but adds only a little time and no cost. But everyone is spinning it into something ridiculous, which is exactly what our liberal legislature hopes.

Check out Quantico Tactical in Oceanside. They have great prices on XD's. Best in San Diego.

You could also go to Davidson's Gallery of Guns and buy a new firearm and have it shipped to a local FFL. Davidson's is a distributor for a variety of manufacturers.
I just purchased a Ruger online from Davidson's and saved about $100 over what I would have paid locally.
In my area, an XD goes for $500.00 from Gallery of Guns, plus Tx and DROS.

Here's the link

Take care,
Dave
