Shipping a firearm??
O.K. I was wondering I know you can ship the slide to a hand gun using the USPS and you can send the receiver by itself using the USPS so why couldn't you send someone a fire arm in two separate boxes and not have to go through a FFL and pay a fee?

Sending the receiver (or "recordable" part of the firearm) MUST be sent to an FFL. So sending the frame of a pistol needs to be declared and sent to an FFL wherever it's going to be delivered.

You can send the receiver in to a repair center. Just not a pistol.

Actually that's quite wrong. You can send either one. But not through the Postal Service.

Last week wife and I shipped our 1911 and priced out UPS. First, they make you use next day Air, so the base price is $30-something. That's not bad. But considering the shop was in-state maybe 150 miles away it seemed silly, but still a reasonable option.
Then, I added insurance. The pistol cost me $2500 and to replace it would hurt more than that. That bumped the cost over $62. So I called the nearest bestest gun shop and they said sure, 40 bucks. We hopped in the car, dropped off the gun, ("Do you realize you can ship this yourself from UPS? Can I see the pistol? ... Oh, I see. Forty dollars!"), and walked away satisfied. Moral of the story: You can ship it yourself, but check with a local FFL first. They may beat the carrier's price and they don't want a firearm they were responsible for to go missing.

And the local FFL can ship via the USPS.

FFL holders can ship entire pistols to other FFL holders using the postal service.
UPS and Fedex will ship from a non- FFL holder too an FFL holder but require you to declare it and use next day air. You can ship slide/barrel/magazines using any method you like and it does not have to go too or from an FFL holder. The frame of a pistol (with the serial on it) is what is considered the firearm and must be treated as if it were whole when shipping. One way I have found of getting around the high FEDEX and UPS fees is to simply sign my firearm over to my local FFL for 15 bucks and have them ship it wherever I want it to go. I can usually ship for about 25 bucks including the transfer fee when I go that route VS 50 bucks for some next day air shipments. If a pistol is being sent in for repair to an FFL holder it must be declared and sent next day air, but the FFL holder can ship it directly back to you. If you are buying a pistol, it can be sent from a non FFL holder but must be sent TOO an FFL holder.

Correct, FFL holders can ship handguns via usps. You can ship long guns usps as long as its going to an FFL. You can ship the slide of a handgun, upper of an AR usps to another individual. Once you ship the frame of either (part with serial number) you have to use an FFL.
I find it cheaper to have my local shop ship via USPS then me use UPS.

You can ship guns to yourself. Use "C/O" and it is legal.
