Empty space in grip...

So as I'm familiarizing myself with the new XD, I can't help but notice that there is an exposed - almost crescent shaped empty space that runs along the back of the grip. Does this have any functionality other than just weight savings? There is also a circular groove molded into the same cavity on the wall thats shared by the mag. It seems pretty deliberate to not have a purpose. Hopefully my explanation makes some sense, if not i'll post pics.

Any ideas?

And this gentleman, concluded my tangent of the day. Discuss.

The crescent-shaped space I'm not sure of.

The "circular groove" sounds like the thumb groove. At least, that's where my right-thumb settles when holding the pistol.

crescent shaped empty space
My guess is that it is a structural design aspect of the plastic that adds torsional rigidity to the grip and backstrap area.

Not exactly what I'm talking about.

The space I'm talking about is pictured directly below the mag. It could just be weight savings, but it looks like it has a purpose.

It's for the shoulder stock, and the early ones didn't have the crescent dealie but my newer ones do.

^ I don't know if that is what it is there for, but that it is what it is often used for.

Here's a picture of a magwell. You can see the insert that goes up into the grip, in that crescent-shaped area.
