I have ADT's cellular service (wireless would be another name for it) for two reasons A) Don't have a home phone & B) don't have to worry about phone cords being cut. They put a battery backup on the system as is so no need to worry about that. If there are any problems, then they just come out and replace the battery and re-check the system. Been very happy with their service in the 3.5 years I've had them.

Or.....If you don't want to pay for the actual service provided by a home security company you can get on ebay and buy their signs. I know several people who have done this. That said I wouldn't rely solely on a sign to get the job done, but it's a deterrent that may help.

I would also look into motion sensor lights, in addition to your other plans.

but wouldnt' you guys/gals feel safer with a fire/smoke detector that is hooked up to a monitoring system to protect those that protect you? This is my biggest fear...When my wife and I are at work I want to make sure God forbid a fire starts that someone is alerted right away to get my dog out of there ASAP! Luckily the fire house is only 2 blocks away from the new house

I've had Brinks before with no issues, but on my last couple of houses in the Detroit area I've used a private company for the install and monitoring. The monitoring runs $22/month and I own the equipment outright, so I can hook up any monitoring service or have modifications done. From what I remember the last time I compared there were a lot more features with the system I had installed out of the box.

We have two dogs and ADT with Monitoring(fire/smoke and break-in). We had a problem at first with the motion sensors but the dogs were setting them off by jumping on the furniture. We no longer use that particular setting on a daily basis, but only use it when the dogs and us humans are out of the house completely.

When alarm was tripped I was notified very quickly and issue was resolved. Since then no, issues at all.

Since you will be traveling, I think that your wife will enjoy the extra level of security. Just make sure that she has access to the keyring remote, cell phone, and gun in the bedroom when she is sleeping and all other times. I think it is worth the expense, if it will make your wife feel more secure.

By the way, if you have USAA insurance, they have a partnership with ADT for reduced costs and installation. Also, if you ever move, as part of the deal ADT will install a new(comparable) system in your new residence for free.

We just recently had an APX/Honeywell system installed in our house.
Fire/smoke/break in and its wireless with battery backup.

only had it for a month so far and tripped in once just to check the response time, and was called within 30 secs. So far i like it. The wife likes it too cause i work nights.

Also have a big cuddly chocolate lab with a mean sounding bark..... but he'd prolly bring the bad guy a ball to play with
