In the OP's scenario, the BG's outline can be seen...so put a quick 90+ lumen flash on his eyes/head. He won't be seeing you--he'll be seeing bright purple blotches for the next several minutes. Heck, when I still had the standard 65 lumen head in my Z2, I waited for my eyes to adjust to night and them flashed myself in the mirror to see how bad it was. It hurts. And now that I upgraded to the 125 lumen lamp, I have no doubts on it's effect on someone who isn't expecting it. Or, even is...and isn't wearing a welding hood.

My first words to him would be hit the floor. After that all bets are off. There wouldntbe a second time. Its my house and he broke into it. The choice is his.

That's the nice thing about the flashlight on my AK, I can bump the light on with my left had and pull trigger with my right...the BG won't see me in time to shoot first.

i havnt read any replies yet, but as of now... id grab my cell phone, rack my XD's slide, move to a better cover/fire position and listen. theyre entering my domain. i know my way around the dark, they dont. time will give away their position with any sort of movement. from that point, id call 911 and then, to be honest... i have no idea lol i need to read these replies.
Edit: ok, read them and am still not sure what id do after that. a bright flashlight might be a good idea (once ive identified his general location by listening). maybe yell at them in a stern/powerful voice about how i have my sights on their chest, ect. i dunno. hopefully i never get into a situation like that. pretty sure id be ready though, bc my door is locked and theres only one way into my room. good post, btw! Thinking about these types of situations and practicing them ahead of time is good for our instinks and reflexes.
I don't think I am going to yell at anyone and give away my position. If he or she is armed I'll shoot first and yell later, my position will only be given a second before I fire. As far as Kansas law reads..."if you have an honest belief you or a third party is going to suffer GREAT BODILY HARM and it is IMINENT". They are in my house with out my permission in the middle of the night...that gives me the belief I need.

+1, I think. It's hard to say. If this were to happen in my house, I know my cover spots and have practiced moving through and clearing when no one is home. If I could see that the intruder had a weapon, then they've waived all chances at a verbal warning. Come into my house with a weapon, you get shot. If I was unsure, I'd take cover, watch the hands, and give 1 verbal warning, but then again this could be very dangerous as it gives away my position. In any case, wife is on the phone giving 911 a play-by-play.

Its interesting that someone would pose this question because I've played this scenario out in my head countless times. I think I'd first yell something like "Get down!" or "Don't move or I'll kill you!" and if they didn't comply I'd have no choice but to open fire.
The risk of being victimized is too great to take a chance on not greeting an intruder with lethal force.

I would have to confirm location of wife and both kids first before pointing weapon mounted light or weapon at anything.
That's why I removed the light from the rail.
