I would be forced to leave the bedroom b/c my kids' rooms are down the hall. Luckily they are on the same level (2nd), but if I'm in the hallway with a shadowed figure in front of me that's anything more than the figure of a 3.5 year old, shots will be fired then questions asked later. There is no way I'm chancing being taken down by an intruder (and possibly arming him with my weapon) and giving the intruder access to my family. If he 'breaks' into my home (law defines as castle), I'm not giving them any consideration or possible advantages.

There is a huge chance that noises in the middle of the night are our housemate. He sometimes bumps into things and the dogs bark. So I would have to be really careful to know exactly who was in the house.

I have a great alarm system here..if anyone other then the family members move in the house I have 6 birds that would go nuts.
My conure screeches a loud annoying sound over and over again when someone strange enters the house. She is loud enough to cut off the noise cancelling ear protectors to give you an idea of her volume. If a car pulls into the drive way she is going nuts. When someone is at the front door she is screaming. I have been in the shower and can hear her screaming and someone will be at the front door knocking when I investigate. Way better then the dogs they sleep through most noises, but their excused being 10 and 11 years old. |

Also forgot to mention that since I have an alarm system and it happened to be the case where my toddler had a bad dream and was in our bed (my other son is only 9 weeks old so he's in our room for the next few months as it is), I'd stay hole'd up in the bedroom until Police arrived. Luckily, my neighbor is a Federal agent and my other good neighbor is an LEO so in theory I could have 2 other 'helpers' within a minute. For sure though, I'm with the theory if there is no need to go outside the area you know to be cleared (i.e. bedroom) and everyone is accounted for then stay trained on the only entry point, no need for excessive risk to yourself or the person(s) you are protecting.

Claymores.....do they still have those at the Army Surplus store? When I build my retirement home maybe I'll build in a master over-ride circuit that when activated by the bedside, it turns ON all the lights in the house and garage and cranks the stereo up to the tune of 76 Trombones. (Patent Pending btw).
In all seriousness, I don't know what I would do. So I just have to know what my options are and let my guts teel me to do onsite.

practice your situation at the range. use a handheld light in your other hand while you shoot. practice loading/arming your weapon and your light at home. I do. practice until it all feels natural. Just make sure your target is one you can do without after you pull the trigger.
