Need your help for SHTF
I needsome "opinions" from my fellow XD guys. I am currently in the process of putting my SHTF gear together and I've hit a hard decision. I currently am the proud father of a 1.5 year old XD40SC, I love this little gun to death and will never get rid of it. That said, I am looking for a gun to better fit my "end of the world" SHTF gear and have narrowed it down to a couple choices. Either a 1911(Kimber SIS or Taurus PT1911) or an XD45c in either 4" or 5". I was origionally gonna go with the XDM, but the mags are not interchangeable, but it could still be an option. I dont mind having two different calibers and I don't mind the 45 ACP either, although I will admit I do love the 40S&W. Let me know what you guys think, thanks.

Personally, I would stick with the XD for an end of the world scenario. I had a Kimber Ultra Carry II. You had to keep this little tool with you to field strip it. While you didn't need the tool to disassemble it, you sure did to reassemble it. I don't know if the 1911 is similar, but ever since then I've been turned off to Kimber. I can field strip my XD and have it put back together before the UC II could be disassembled. Just my .02

I would stick with the xd40sc...though the 1911 may be a nice gun to have as well seeing as how everyone and their mother has one so if you had to grab a mag from someone, chances are it would work fine in your weapon.
I've also been thinking about what gun to have for SHTF situations...I may end up going with a glock 22 (as backup) as it's what all law enforcement is issued around here...it would be nice to be able to grab one if their mags if need be. |

If you decide on a 1911, you should look into a Springfield GI or Loaded. The Loaded is a great gun.

I've thought about this a bit as well, and my conclusion is that, first, if it's a SHTF scenario, I want only pistols that have the ability to operate under eXtreme Duty situations, and that I'm very familiar with.
I've recently learned how to do a detail strip of my XD-9. That knowledge, I'm sure, translates to the other XD models. Further, one reason for my first purchase of an XD over any other handgun possibility was the ability for that gun to work when it's dirty, been run over, frozen, you-name-it. The very last thing I want is to have a special tool with which I need to strip any weapon. My next handgun purchase will almost certainly be an XD45, which model I do not know. I don't really want to consider any other option that isn't able to handle the rigors of a SHTF scenario, plus needs anything special for me to take it apart.

What else are you looking at for your kit?
To paraphrase Cooper, your pistol is only for fighting your way back to your long gun. I wouldn't stress too much about a specific choice (XD40 vs XD45 vs XDM vs some other gun). Keep what you're good with and feel is reliable. If it's good enough for everyday carry or home defense, it's probably good enough for SHTF. Also, in a SHTF scenario, why would you want to limit yourself to an 8 round mag in a 1911 frame? That would be one scenario where the XD (or other) higher mag cap could actually be a factor. |

My suggestion would be an XD45. Its hard to beat the 14 round capacity. The accuracy of the XD45 is great! I actually shoot better with my XD45c than I do with my Kimber PRO TLE RL/II. Thats just my opinion though.

If you are looking at a SHTF scenario I would go high capacity. Stick with the .40 to standardize your ammo and get the XDM or XD Service in .40. If you don't want to stick with .40, I would get the XD .45 since it has the higher capacity over the 1911.

My thoughts exactly. If you want a 1911 frame then look at the Para or some other double stacked 1911. Personally if I was looking for a SHTF it would be the XD45 Tactical.

When things go to Defcon 1 I would switch from my 9sc to 45tactical. I also keep a couple of H&K Tacticals just for that same reason. Hi Cap and hard to tear up.
