I've been thinking of this very thing, and I'll suggest what I'm thinking of doing: get a second XD-40, and some spare parts. You'll have two reliable pistols in case something happens to one of them, plus you have familiarity.
But I'll also second what ocbruin said, and make sure you get a long gun to go with your pistol.

Dont be worried about your pistol. Be worried about your rifle. I'm not a big believer in preparing for a SHTF scenario, but I wouldn't plan on running into WWIII waving a dang pistol.
A Glock or an XD would be my sidearm of choice. Tough to break, easy to clean. Caliber negotiable, but I would definitely take some of the 'frills' off of my XD if I wanted it in combat. No need for thumbrests and magwells bulking up my backup weapon.

a good pistola can save your life
I'd stick with a form of XD. That's 1 of the SHTF scenario pistols i'd be taking too. along with an ugly 1 i'm in the process of getting. a Grendel P-30. It won't win any beauty competitions but with 30 rounds of .22 magnum in the semi-compact size handle (no mag hanging down) it is pretty awesome. .22 mag is nothing to think down about. plus ammo is semi-cheap. |

Instead of the Kimber or Taurus, can I make a different recommendation:
Dillon Aero: M134 Gatling Gun, Miniguns, M134 Gun Systems, Naval Mounts, Helicopter Mounts, Vehicle Mounts |
