My first XD
Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and also new to the XD experience. I obtained an XD40 Service in a trade yesterday and although I have not shot it, I am happy with it so far. I like the feel of it and the way it points in my hand. I have 2 Springfield Armory 1911A1's and an M1A, so I have been in the SAI family for quite awhile.
I do have a few questions about it if you guys can help me. It is an older model that the original owner say was pre-melonite finish, so it has some holster wear. That really doesn't concern me at this point. Are there any issues with this weapon that I need to be concerned with? Any recalls or defective models that are floating around that I need to check on? What parts are prone to breakage if any in the XD40? Will this model convert to .357 Sig caliber by just changing barrels as it is with other popular .40 cal pistols? Any other tips or tidbits of info that you can give me on this new-to-me pistol? Last edited by Sniperfox; 08-06-2008 at 11:23 AM. |

Can't really help you out with the questions about parts breaking - I know there have been very very few that have broken down in the bigger scheme of things. As for the finish - the pre-melonite guns SOMETIMES under CERTAIN circumstances had the tendency to show some rust. My recommendation is keep it oiled up and see if you have any issues. Secondly if you do start to have issues there are some very awesome treatments available to protect your guns finish. I personally had my slide nickle plated by a local gunsmith here in St. Louis and I couldn't be happier - the price was right too - about $90.00 for the slide... I think with sight installation and all of the internal parts (grip safety, trigger, pins, locking block) nickled I spent about $150.00 Good luck with your new purchase! Be safe.

As far as I have learned from being on this board for a few months, the only part that is particularly prone to breakage is the striker retainer pin. These are very cheap and easily replaced without a gunsmith. They are available from vendors on here and there is a sticky about replacing this pin.
I personally have not had one break but have purchased a few and the roll pin punch to drive them just in case. As far as the finish, premelonite slides are more prone to rust, however I think the black finish will wear regardless of whether the slide is melonite treated or not. As far as interchangeability of slides, I will leave that to the guys with 40's. |

I was thinking more along the lines of a drop in .357 barrel. My Glock 22 and Sigpro are converted like that.

Since no one answered your question I will:
No, you can't convert your .40 to a .357 sig. Firedragon has conversion barrels to 9mm, but this would be it, at least so far.
