Couple questions for ya
Well some of you may have read that I just took my basic practical required for CCP as well as my wife.
My wife shot great, especially for having never shot the XD and for never really shooting a 9 before. One thing that she had a problem with was racking the slide. It kind of caught me off guard but for whatever reason she couldnt imput the force required to do it. She could on some of the other guns that were there just not my XD9. It is a new gun so the spring is kind of hard right now so maybe it will just wear off. I am wondering if this is normal and I should just have her practice a lot? Or maybe there is a technique that helps for her to learn to do it properly until her muscles just adapt in her hands. SHe was doing the push/pull thing and that seemed to help but she still couldnt quite do it smoothly. Anyway, that lead me to think about her using gloves... now stay with me on this (LOL). I am thinking maybe she was just worried about messing up her hands with it. Has anybody had experience with that by any chance? Who uses shooting gloves on a regular basis? and if you do, any reason in paticular? |

I think letting her try gloves (at least on her weak hand) would be a good idea until she is more used to it. I personally don't like gloves much because I feel I lose dexterity, but I will wear them in cold weather. The spring will soften some over time, and more practice will always help. Do make sure she is keeping her strong hand as high on the grip as possible--this will keep the push/pull efforts in as straight of path as can be. Holding low on the grip will definately make it more difficult--try it yourself.

Another thing to try is the push method where you grasp the slide with the weak hand, hold the grip with the strong hand and push your hands together. Hold the gun at chest height and force he slide in a fashion that is close to an isometric exercise where resistance is used to biuld muscle strength ... It's kind of hard to explain what I mean, but maybe you'll get the idea. The closer to the body she holds the gun to her body, the greater the leverage she can apply.
And yes, with time the spring will soften a little, or perhaps it's just getting used to the force required to rack the thing and chanber a round ... I've never tried a scientific method to determine if there is a break in on the spring, or if the body just gets stronger, But I suspect it is the latter. Most of it, is technique
