Well for me its in case the main carry fails mechanically. I could get surprised and tackled and loose the XD.
I actually have the ability to have the LCP or snub in my right hand in my pocket. I have to sweep and draw the XD from my strong left.

I think if you primary carry an auto, your BUG should also be an auto. I got a 442 w/ ct grips for pocket/back up use and the difference in the XD trigger vs the DAO revolver was making me inconsistent.

I know all gets better with practice and use, but 2 compltetly different trigger pulls will make muscle memory on both weaker IMO

The backup that I carry ankle carry is barely noticeable. And it only takes a few extra seconds to strap it on every morning. My boots rarely ever come off until the end of the day so I only have to mess with it twice a day. Once to put it on and once to take it off and secure it at the end of the day.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's such a non issue as far as convince goes that I don't see the big deal with carrying a back up.

Most folks will never need to use even their primary weapon so you are probably right it probably isn't needed but then again your primary weapon will probably never be needed either.

I'll probably catch a little greif for this here but my backup to my XD is a glock 33 357 sig with the extended mag and figure grip, night sights, and 3 lb trigger. Sits great in my ankle holster and really easy to conceal. I like the way it shoots more than the other subcompacts i've shot.

I don't carry it as a back up but my primary small ccw gun is a kahr 9mm p9 convert (it has the p9 slide and the Pm9 grip). I went with this gun after firing my snubby wheelgun at night with winchester ranger ammo in it, THe fireball was incredible. I was completely blind after the first shot. THe P9 covert offers more rounds, quicker reloads, more manageable recoil, less muzzle flash. It gives up some margin of reliability (theoretically) and can;t be carrying in a pocket without a holster or fired through a pocket more then once. BUt for me its an acceptable trade off.

I don't list my guns - I know glocks, FALs, and AKs but I'm not sure my ability to fill a gunsafe with guns make me an expert on anything.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting.

I don't know that I agree with that. If I have to go to a BUG I want to be absolutely sure the gun will work. Revolvers are just about the most reliable gun available they don't fail to feed, stovepipe, or fail to eject. A lot of people confuse accuracy at the range with being an effective self defense shooter, center mass is really a pretty big area to hit. I'll bet you can hit center mass pretty easy with the 442 with CT grips.

I normally only carry my XD45C...When I'm driving I carry my Charter Arms 38 hammerless as a Bug, It stays in my truck..Nice little gun and shoots well for a snubbie.
Its easier to get too than drawing Left Handed with a seat belt, should the need arise.

Back Up Gun

My back up gun is a North American Arms .22 magnum PUG revolver. 5 shots, extremely small, just rides in a pocket all day.
