D.I.Y. Polish Job!

Well here it is! After approximately 10 hours of finger tip torturing work Its done! I started the hard way With 400 then 600 then 1500 grit sand paper. Didnt go so well so after about 2.5 hours of that nonsense on just the barrel I found this thread:

polished barrel: home job

Much thanks to everyones contributions and advice in that thread especially
xd_john and g29cc.

Once I read that thread I wised up and pulled out the dremel. I used some little sponge-like polishing brush to quickly remove most of the blue, then I used the felt pads to buff up the shine with jewelers rouge (I got mine at the T&A truck stop, you actually have to go back into the Semi repair shop and ask for it). I used the green to start, then the white to finish and I'm still touching everything up with mother's mag & aluminum polish. My fingers are sore as heck today from tightly holding all the bits and pieces while polishing but I love the way it turned out. But the next time I want somthing polished I will definatly be sending it to g29cc.

Polishing the Mag release was HELL to get out and put back in so if I knew what I know now that thing would probably still be black.

It's so shiny it was really hard to get good pictures, these three are the best out of about 20 taken but it looks even better IRL

Very nice work, I like the detail with the letters. Going to have to do that with my new tac. Did you use testors? Nail polish or crayons?

Thanks Guys!

For the Letters I used Brownell's Lacquer Stick (Thanks bellyscraper!):

LACQUER-STIK® at Brownells

It went in like putty or really warm wax, then you wipe off the excess and supposedly its supposed to harden in there and be pretty sturdy. I just did it right before the pictures so that's why the slide around them looks a little red.

Still having a hard time getting good shots but heres 2 more I love the bright reflective one

I can't see the pictures since I'm at work but I have a question about polishing. Are there any "benefits" in polishing barrels, internal parts, etc. or is it done merely for cosmetic reasons? Does it make the parts more rust resistant or more rust prone?
