XD Serpa holster question

I just received my Blackhawk CQC Serpa for my XD 4in pistol...I have the Dawson Precision fixed rear/front sights installed on the XD with the red fiber optic front sight...the space between the holster and the front sight is about a piece of paper or 2 and not wanting break the front sight I was wondering if you guys recommend taking some fine sand paper and sand away some of the plastic near the front sight to give it more clearance... if so, what grit paper do you recommend?

does anyone else have a tight fit with their XD and Dawson sights?

I have a Dawson front sight mated with the factory rear sight and have never had a problem with my Serpa. However, I am pretty sure your sight is taller than mine (mine is same as factory); so this might not help. I would draw the gun from holster quite a few times and look inside the holster for signs of the sight dragging before I went to any sand paper.

If it is just a few millimeters (and it sounds like it is), I would personally have the sand paper out. I can't really recommend a certain grit, but I wouldn't be too worried about it. You won't mess up the Serpa by taking a little bit off...

I looked at my Serpa cqc last night, and it's a consistent curvature all the way from the rear to front of the holster above the sights. If I had to do it, I'd pickup a 'rat-tail' (round) file at Home Depot in a pretty coarse cut (it may be meant for woodwork), and go to town taking the desired thickness off. If it does not meet your requirements for surface smoothness when done, you can then wrap a piece of sandpaper around a dowel (or the file) to smooth it out.

Git 'r done.

If you can borrow a dremel tool. It seems if you don't have one your neighbor will.

I'd say dremel too, except you want to remove material in a long, semicircular area which would be ideal for a round file. The dremel would be tight trying to get it all the way inside, and taking off a consistent amount over the 4 or 5 inches inside the holster.

An electric drill with as big a drill bit as you can fit in the chuck, and the holster put over the drill and pushed gently onto the side of the spinning drill bit would not be elegant, but would work, too.

If you have to sand it use some like 1000 grit wet sand paper and do it by hand if possible. then do it with 2000 wet. That should work. It will probably take like 30-1hr if you do a really good meticulous job.

it's plastic, a dremel or rat tail file will make quick work of it. had to do modifying of my own when I got the extended mag release.
