XD9 Tactical = dissapointment

My son bought a XD45 tactical 3 weeks ago, and we both love it. Comfortable, quick, accurate, and (so far) 100% reliable with WWB. So....being a 9mm guy, I bought the XD9 Tactical to compliment my G17. I went to the range yesterday and was VERY dissapointed at it's accuracy. I benched rested it at 15 yds. and couldn't do better than an 8" group. Totally unacceptable. Of course my offhand opened up to about a 12" group. Frustrated, I grabbed my G17 and promptly shot a 4" group offhand. Granted my G17 has Dawson Precision fiber optic sights and trigger work, but that doesn't make up for a 8" difference in group sizes, especially with the XD benched!

Other than the deplorable accuracy, I like the way the gun handles. The trigger is pretty good for stock, and functioning was flawless with WWB.

I let someone else shoot it who could only equal my results. And before you ask, I've been shooting for 30 years and know about trigger control and sight pictures. Remember, it was benched too.

So, what to do now? I thought about switching ammo, but don't think WWB should shoot that bad from any gun at 15 yds. Call Springfield? Send it off, wait 4+ weeks to have them say there's nothing wrong with it?

This is my first Springer, and I'm bummed about it's performance. I even bought the accessory pak with 3 extra mags. I'm thinking I'm screwed. What say you?

Solo,

I'm pretty new to the XD world myself. I have a '9 Service that has probably 1000 to 1500 rounds through it. The gun shoots very well for what it is. The accuracy, while not up the standards of my 1911, is impressive. I'm not that good a shot, but I can pretty easily do minute of 8" pie plate at 25 yards offhand using a 6 o'clock site picture, better if I take a bit of time.

You've covered your technique so, assuming its not that, I'd look at the barrel/slide fit at lockup. On my service there's a wee bit of play between the slide and the frame, but the barrel to slide fit is rock solid.

If that doesn't do it, I'd call the folks at SA and explain the whole story. They have a stellar rep when it comes to customer service. Perhaps they can offer a suggestion to get it to shoot like it should or you can let them take a look at it.

good luck,

slim

Well you already own a glock so you must be used to getting screwed lol.
Seriously you are in the minority in having an inaccurate Tactical. Call SA, if you're not willing to let them fix it then you ARE screwed.

If it's not you then it's the gun. Send it to Springfield and they'll fix whatever's wrong with it. What I CAN tell you, XD ARE very accurate combat pistols and there is no doubt about it. You may have ended up with a lemon, it happens.

Yeah, after shooting my son's XD45 Tactical, I was really impressed, and had no reservations about buying my XD9 Tactical. Did I get a lemon that can be fixed? Maybe, but that shouldn't happen, period. You have to understand that this is my first Springer, so I have a bad taste in my mouth for it right now. I'll shoot it benched one more time and send the targets in to Springfield with the gun.

Kaboom...don't diss my Glocks buddy. Right now their whooping a$$ on the XD.

I do fairly well with WWB in my XD .45 but really lousy with it in the wife's Bersa. Might be worth trying another brand before sending it back.

Try some different ammo.

I'm not completely sold on WWB. I've mostly shot Remington, been pretty happy with it, but bought some WWB since it's a bit cheaper.

I didn't do as well with it as I would have liked, including one flyer that I swear couldn't have been due to anything I did.

I've got to do some comparison bench rest testing to see whether there's a truly significant difference.

I would expect the gun to shoot MUCH better than an 8" group rested... that's crap. On You Tube I saw a reviewer who bench rested 2.5" groups with an XD9.

First, I'd try a different ammo, second I'd rent another XD9 Tac and shoot it. If the results are good, send yours into Springfield and tell them what's up.

Try some other ammo, if still no good, send it back, HK, SIG, Glock, SA etc. are all capable of producing lemons once in awhile.
