XD40sc OR XD9 sc??

You can not go wrong with either. I carry a glock 23c 40 and I feel confident with it. I sometimes carry a xd9 service and do not feel any less confident with it over the 40. It is going to come down to personal preference and mindset.

Let me add this about the XD9sc and the .40. They are the same frame size. Springfield built the XD9sc on the .40 frame. So the XD9sc is the same size as the .40 and the .45. My XD9sc will cram in the XD9 service model holsters but it does not really fit. I can adjust my CTAC holster to fit the XD9sc. I think the size difference is .05 thicker. So the XD9sc, .40 and .45 will fit in the same holster. I don't know why Springfield did that, but it seems to be true.

I prefer 9MM over .40. Now, the only .40 that I have shot is a Glock 23 and I really did not care for the recoil. My first XD was the XD9 SC, then I bought the XD45 Tactical. Now, that is a sweet shooting pistol! The XD9 SC is my carry gun, but will soon be replaced by my 9 MM EMP. I prefer the thinner profile of the EMP.

In my opinion, each individual needs to carry something that they are comfortable with. After reading tons of information about self defense rounds, I am confident that the 9 MM in a quality JHP is sufficient. Having said that, the .40 and especially the .45 ACP will provide a little more "stuff" and a bigger hole. If I could comfortably carry a .45 ACP, I would. Currently, I am really considering getting a SA Lightweight Champion Operator. Not sure if it would be a carry gun for me though. But, maybe.

Coming from someone with the XD SC .40, I would probably get the 9mm if I had to do it over again. I bought the .40 because my USP is a .40 and I wanted to be able to use the same ammo. There are a few reasons I would go with the 9mm though.

-9mm is a lot cheaper to plink.
-A good 9mm hollow point is almost as effective as a .40
-You get extra capacity which in the stress of a firefight could mean a lot.
-Although it is not an issue for me, many people can get better and quicker shot placement with a 9mm than a .40 due to the .40's "snappier" recoil.


Either way, you are getting a great gun.

Owning two XD40 Subcompacts, you know where my allegiance lies.

The bottom line is YOU. Which gun do you handle better? THAT is the one you should purchase.

Too often I see (most) people at the range who can barely keep it on target shooting larger caliber guns. They should pick one that they can accurately shoot under controlled environment such as the range, THEN think about carrying one / having one for self/home defense.

New member here, and this is exactly the thread I've been searching for! I'll be buying an XD SC and was looking for feedback on these different caliber guns. I recently rented and shot an XD 40 w/ 4" barrel at a gun range and did quite well (haven't shot a handgun or rifle in over 2 years). I have no formal training and this will be my 1st handgun.

I'm now leaning toward the 9mm after this thread. my gun will be primarily used for hobby - target shooting. I plan to get my ccw to have it, but am not currently comfortable carrying a loaded weapon around. I need a lot of practice before that. I appreciate those that voiced their opinions here. it helped!

In your case i would get a 9mm service, then, if you are doing target shooting primarily. more rounds, full size for good practice. you can always get a smaller/subcompact gun later, right?
are you wanting an sc because long term you will have it be your ccw?

at any rate, i encourage you to SHOOT the guns you are interested so you know what to expect. i shot the 9 sc and fell in love with it. i've always shot a .40, and with my XD45 tactical coming in, i wanted a 9mm to compliment. also see above posts for positives of having a 9mm. good luck

Crushload - Yes, eventually I'd like to carry in certain situations. It's going to take some practice to get there. I like the sub compact b/c of the size also - I'm a decent sized guy (6'1" 185 lbs) w/ small hands. I shot my friend's glock 26 that same day I shot the springfield xd 4" barrel and liked the smaller size of the glock better, but liked the features of the springfield more. I've got my heart set on one in olive drab/black...do you suggest I wait for a gun show to come around or contact a local shop? I've got the itch!
