Smile Newby Advice

Hello everybody. This is my first time posting. Before I start I want to say, great job you guys are doing with this forum. Now to my question.

Before I start, I want to to let you know am a Glock guy. Am a member to your neighbor forum, Glocktalk.LOL.

Here is the situation;my brother is thinking about getting his first gun. He went to all the safety classes. He ask me for advice, as to what gun and caliber to get. Of course, me being a Glock guy, I told him to get a G19(by the way am also a .40cal guy, but for his 1rst gun I thought a 9mm would be great). The problem is that he resides in the Republic of Massachusetts, so Glocks are not sold to civilians.
I heard that XD,s are great guns, and so are the smith & wesson M&P. My question is:
Has anybody tried boths?
What are the pros an cons?
Has the rust issue been resolved with the melonite finish?
What XD will be good for him that is close to the G19 in size?

Again thank you for helpng a Glock guy out, and keep doing great things with this forums. I dont care what kind of gun anybody uses, we all got to come together when it comes to guns issues.

First..........welcome to the forums.

Second........haven't ever shot a M&P so I can't really give you an answer about trying both.

Third..................I never really knew that the Republik of Massa-chews-it bans civilians of buying a Glock. Uncle Teddy really screwed up that state.

Yes my friend, it is sad. i dont exactly know the criteria, but some guns in MA, got to pass a compliance MA checklist, in order to be sold to civilians.

Welcome to the forum. I have shot both the XD and M&P Compact. I went with the XD and now have two. The M&P is a great firearm, I just preferred the XD. My least favorite part of the M&P was the trigger.

mhillsing23,
So for a new guy, it be easier for him to get used to the XD trigger? Was the M&P trigger pull long and heavy or did it just felt mushy?

I've also shot both and prefer the XD to the M&P. Didn't like the trigger or the way it felt in my hands. Felt kinda slippery. The gun looks great but in the end I felt more comfortable with the XD. I'm also purchasing another XD at the end of July. A Sub-Compact .40

First... Welcome from Alaska. I would let your brother shoot the pistol first if you can. Rent them just for the feel in the hand. Let him make the choice... I went with the XD's because it felt so good in my hand. The fit to your hand is half the battle. The XD 9mm comes in a subcompact, service and tactical version. Check the website of SA for tech numbers. I like the XD45 compact for CCW.... and my XD9 SC for those evening when I'm out with my wife. But again to me its the feel in my hand that had me. Good luck.

First I'd like to say WELCOME!

I have owned all three. Glocks, Smith M&P, and XD. All three are great weapons.

Pros & cons
Glocks= never felt right to me. Grip angle did not feel right to me.
M&P= Felt good in my hand but trigger pull was long and sloppy
XD = Fit my big hands good, good grip angle, Like the grip safety

I have sold my Glocks and my M&P. Still own my XD's in 40S&W and 45ACP
and my old 1911 gubba-mint issue 45acp

Yep, they're great guns. I'm actually on my 4th XD and looking for my 5th. I too prefer them over the M&P and Glocks. I've never had a chance to shoot the M&P but I can't stand the trigger & the interchangeable backstraps don't include on to fit me. I shoot them better than Glocks & like the trigger a bit better so I sold my Glocks and stick with XDs, 1911s, & Sigs now.

As for which XD to compare to the G19, that would be the XD9 Service. It's a 4" bbl "Compact" like the 19. The rust issue has also been taken care of although it was never as bad as it was made out to be on Glocktalk and some other forums. I've owned 2 non-melonite XDs and never had a problem with rust. I don't recall seeing any reports of rust whatsoever with the melonite finish though.

Best bet would be to let him shoot both the XD and the M&P to see which HE likes better and shoots better with. A lot of people prefer them over both XDs & Glocks so they've got to be doing something right. Only thing I'd watch out for is rust though. They are supposed to have the melonite finish as well but there have been some recent reports popping up of more rusting on some of the controls & around the sights. I guess these parts aren't the SS or melonite finished.
