thanks for the replies - checked the barrel - and it was completely unaffected by this - it's still perfect.
Just a smudge just to the left of the front sight, the sight didn't get pressed off-center either. so, this morning, I started with 14 rounds, and fed them through manually to check that all was working. Had a couple snags, unfortunately, but, I think I learned that you have to do it fast, not slow, to prevent misfeeds. I think all is OK - but I must go to the range to be sure. does springfield cover this type of warranty repair if something is wrong with it? (no wife, no kids...btw - read that post up there |

The only acceptable way to load a round in an XD is to insert the round into the magazine and chamber the round by either racking the slide or, if the slide is locked back, releasing the slide-stop lever. I hope you didn't insert the cartridge into the chamber and then let the slide down. The extractor is not designed for that. It's designed to engage the casing as it is fed from the magazine. Otherwise, when you release the slide, the extractor has to snap over the casing, which can cause trouble in the long run (as well as perhaps a fail to eject in the short run.) Goose

I loaded the magazine, and gripped the grip safety, pulled back the slide manually to make sure the ammo fed correctly, and ejected properly - it works fine.
Are you saying that if the slide is in slide lock, and you load a magazine, it's improper to pull back on the slide, and let it go forward to load a round??? that does not seem right to me, at all...am I reading that right? |

But before, you had snags and apparently misfeeds (or mis-ejects). It's not improper to pull it back and let it go forward to load a round. That's what you should do. Do this (in a safe place, like a range w/ barrel pointed downrange): Lock your slide back on an empty weapon. Insert a loaded magazine. Flip the slide-lock lever so the slide springs forward. This is one way to load the weapon. Another, if the slide is forward, is to rack it vigorously--pull it all the way back, let it go, assuming the slide-lock isn't going to engage. In other words, try to mimic what happens when the weapon fires.

Are you kidding? Take that thing outside and throw it as far as you can in a random direction. Go pick it up, load it, and fire away. These things can take a lot more abuse than just dropping it on the floor/ground.

Your story immediately reminded me of this funny thread from a competing forum. I particularly enjoy this guy's writings:
Today I went to the outdoor range at the club where I belong . . . When I got there it was sunny, calm, and mild weather. Beautiful, perfect day. I was in a great mood, and really enjoying just being there and lookin' forward to shooting my favorite baby (USP Compact 45). Shot the USPc 9mm first so it wouldn't get jealous, while I warmed up with a couple 13 round mags. . . wiped it down and put it back in the case, and into my shooting bag. Took out the 45, and carefully laid it on one of the carpet samples they keep handy there so you don't mar the finish of your gun on the rough wooden planks of the benchrest. As per club rules, I had the slide locked back, gun pointed downrange, and a fuzzy yellow pipe-cleaner in the chamber to show it was unloaded, as I picked up a mag to fill it with fresh ammo. . . So there I am, all happy and loading up the mags, when, out of nowhere, a freak gust of wind comes blasting through, and whips the little piece of carpet up and into the air over my head with the vengeance of a demon, and flips my baby ass-over-teakettle smashing and skittering on the unforgiving concrete below like a Mexican jumping bean on steroids. Almost as an angry final gesture, on the last step of the dance, the slide snapped shut on the little fuzzy yellow pipe-cleaner, neatly severing it in two, swallowing the half that had dared to cling for dear life in the chamber. . . My heart in my throat, I rushed to my fallen child and cradled her in my arms for a minute or two before being able to build up enough nerve to look her over. After taking stock of a nasty gash on the front of the slide and the front sight, I noticed an even worse one on the back of the slide near the hammer. Starting to feel sick inside, I gingerly opened the slide, and she spat out the undigested half of the fuzzy pipe-cleaner with an air of disgust. With a kind of stubborn resignation, I slapped the magazine in, turned to face the target, and shot a perfect-center bullseye at 45 feet. . . I'm still in pain, and I haven't been able to bring myself to look at her since I got home, but at least I know now she's fine (although I still need to grieve and heal). . . |
