Welcome from AZ! I too have an XD40, it's a great gun. I've put one of the Don's Guide Rods in it with the 18# spring and it made a very noticable difference in it's shooting characteristics, I highly recomend one.

Enjoy your new gun!

Basically you're replacing the stock guide rod with a solid, one piece unit, you order the new spring with it. For me it made the felt recoil less which quickened my follow up for double taps and tightened my groups. I suppose being new to guns though this probably doesn't interest you yet ... but it will ... it's a very addictive sport!

This link will tell you everything about Don's Guide Rod.

Congrats on the XD! It's a ton of fun to shoot, and these forums are AWESOME resources about shooting, XD mods, and all around gun information. Great spot to seek advice too.

The guide rod and spring wbyrd is talking about is a very popular "custom" part that XD owners put in their pistols to change the recoil characteristics. It just replaces the spring that sits between the slide and the bottom part of the barrel, and it's easy to change out. The difference in Don's guide rod and the factory rod is that Don's is a single piece rather than a 2 spring "piston" design like the one from the factory. A lot of people like the way the single piece rod controls recoil. I personally use one with a heavier (22#) spring to further mute recoil.

BUT we're putting the cart before the horse - get a few hundred rounds through that baby ASAP and see how it shoots for you before worrying about changing anything!! And HAVE FUN!

Looking at the photo the rear sight looks different from one side to the other. I think something is wrong with your gun.

I'll test it for you just send me the firearm and 500 rnds of ammo.

Congrats on the purchase, let us know how it shoots.
