conversion barrel question
I ordered an xd9-sc Saturday but it will not actually be ordred until Tuesday from the dealer. I just found out about the conversion barrels. Should I have ordered the 40 so I could convert to the 9 ? Seems like I'd be getting two guns for around $155 more. Also, how does the conversion affect the warranty ? Is it worth it ? Thanks

I have a 40 xdm and used to have a 40 tactical. I shot a conversion barrel made by efk for 9mm.. yes, essentially you can have two guns for the price of one...
I would not use the conversion barrel if i were on duty or carrying. I bought it really to shoot cheaper ammo. occasionally i had a few fte using the barrel, most likely because I didn't want to modify my 40 magazines to make sure the 9mm sat correctly in the mag. It depends on what you want to do. If you want to shoot 9mm, they buying the 9mm was the right choice. If you would like to shoot 40 and sometimes plink with 9mm then I would get the 40 and buy the conversion barrel, which is what I did. I would not tell springfield that you are shooting a conversion barrel in their weapon, I don't know how that affects the warranty. I imagine it might void it since it might be considered a modification to the weapon not made by springfield. Last edited by Frogman77; 06-22-2008 at 05:24 PM. Reason: adding reply |

The problem is that no one currently has a conversion barrel for the SC. EFK Fire Dragon has one listed on their site, but they're not currently producing them. I contacted them recently and they said they were looking into this, but did not have a time frame. Sounds like the small SC might be difficult due to tight tolerances? Just a guess.
But yes, if you were buying a 4" and/or 5", if you buy the 40, there are several vendors that produce 9mm conversion barrels. Most recommend buying 9mm magazines to use with the 9mm conversion barrels as well.

I called EFK today and a gentleman told me the sc's barrel was cracking / breaking at the bottom of the barrel that locks it into the frame (more technical terms were used, but that's what I gathered). He said they were holding off on production until they could research the problem further. He also said the service model conversions are doing just fine. As for me, I'm staying with the sc9, that's a better reason to buy another gun. Probably the 45 next. Thanks for your help.
