I'd go with the 9, which I did and am happy. The caliber wars are a neverending battle but I feel comfortable with a 9.

I've got a 40cal Glock and now 2 9mm XD's and they will both do the job. Don't fall under that peer pressure of bigger is better (I tell my wife that every night when we go to bed!)
Seriously, get the 9mm and you'll love the 9mm.

.40 caliber is at best marginally better then 9MM; go 9MM or 45 skip the .40 IMO.

I chose the 9sc. I felt if I needed the bigger caliber I would pack the 45 service occasionally in summer as I do all the time in winter. With the proper 9mm SD load your not going to lack for protection. Odds are your going to pack the 10 rd in the gun and at least the 16 rd in a mag holder if not more mags. 26 to 26+ rounds is a heap of fire power.
HST's 124 to 147 gr is my advice.

I agree with pleasantguy. I keep my XD-9s/c in a pocket holster in my cargo shorts pocket with the 10 round mag in it and one in the chamber. I then most of the time will have my 16 round mag in the other pocket so that's 27 rounds. As an added measure I keep JHP's in the gun and the extra mag I have some heavy ball ammo for penetration. I know that sounds silly but a shooter that I respect taught me that. Hollowpoints are great for defense, but what if for some reason you needed to shoot through something, then you'd like to have the FMJ. This way you have both and plenty of it.

FWIW, I did both. Get the .40, and a conversion bbl from PistolGear, and shoot either one.
I'm going to the range this weekend, haven't tested it yet. Not sure I'd carry it for SD without a lot of testing. But that is an option to consider.

I suggest sticking with the 9mm. The practice ammo (ball) is cheaper and the Hollow Points for 9mm are as good as any. You will enjoy shooting the 9 on extended range shoots and the 9 will be less intimidating to friends who shoot your XD. I have shot the 9mm sub compact and it was very nice. I could have shot it all day.

I have the 9 and a friend has the 40. I like them both. I went with the 9 because 1. It is a proven caliber, 2. It is cheaper to shoot and 3. I already have other 9's and did not want to buy another caliber ammo.
Like the other people said, shoot them both before you make up your mind. AKD
