Question Just got a new Springfield XD 9mm in sub compact

I have question about ammo for it, I bought it to have a small auto to carry but also as inexpensive round to shoot at the range to practice with. I will probably most likely shoot wwb out of it at the range but was wondering what is some good ammo for personal defense thats not overly expensive so it can be shot up from time to time and replaced with fresh ammo. Also when do you guys consider ammo "old". This is my first post so Hi to everyone in the forum!! Thanks for your input.

I use HST 124gr in mine. Pretty cheap, it works. Ammo doesn't get old. Don't take a bath with it and you'll be fine.

I am preparing for my baby to arrive next week. The XD9 SC that is, and I have been shopping around for cheap ammo too. I found a screaming deal at midwayusa and if you look through the Wolf brand ammo you can get thousand rounds of JHP for $133 or something like that and I think the shipping is based on where you live. For me the shipping was like $23. When I did the math that worked out to just under $8 per box. I think it's Russian but it will go bang nonetheless. BTW, welcome to the forum!

Avalanche2082,

Welcome to the Forum.

Congratulations on the XD9. Great gun. You'll Love it.

There is nothing wrong with WWB for practice. It is cheap to shoot, and that is the main goal, to shoot, shoot, and SHOOT some more...

For persoanl defense ammo, I would choose the Federal Premium 9mm 135gr Hydra-Shok Personal Defense ammo.

Everyone has their personal preference, but i stick with Federal.

To buy bulk ammo, you can try this site. There are other sites, but I use this one.

Outdoor Marksman Corporation & BUYAMMO.COM

by the way, NO, ammo does not get old.

Good Luck.

Concerning your target ammo: 50 years from now I would consider testing your ammo out and see if age has had any effect on it.

If it's personal defense ammo I shoot up my existing stuff and go buy new ammo every year. Some people do this every month but I've never had a problem with an annual cycle.

I use hydra shok as well...

Welcome to the forums, Avalanche2082!!!

Here's a page I send people to for an idea of what's out there and what might work.
terminal 9mm luger

Personally, most anything in a defensive round is gonna work if you practice and are able to hit the threat.

Whatever ammo you choose ... Shoot a box or two and ensure your gun cycles it properly. After that use the range ammo and keep the defensive stuff in reserve. As others have said, shoot it up sometime within a year or so and replace it.

Myself, I just keep a 16 round magazine full of defense stuff, shoot the one that is in the barrel when at the range, then top off the magazine when my range day is complete, and cycle the fresh round into the chamber.

The thing you don't want to do ... Is keep putting a previously chambered round back in the magazine and cycle it into the chamber. The continuous rechambering, might cause the bullet to setback and create a round with excessive pressure.
If that doesn't make sense ... Just say so and I'll go into greater detail.

Enjoy the new gun, and the forums!!!

ETA:
PMC 95g JHP, Remington BJHP GS +P, Speer JHP GD (Gold Dot) are all very good brand/types of ammo IMO.

never thought of that. thats exactly what i do. when i take my gun out to the range, i empty the mag that was in it and the round in the chamber. then when i return, i fill a mag up with my hydra shocks and rechamber a round. im sure at least one has been rechambered so far.

Doing it once or twice may not hurt, in fact doing in many times may not hurt. I personally just use my calipers and measure the rounds for any setback. I know that I have rounds that have been chambered 5-7 times that have no setback whatsoever. If you aren't going to measure for setback I personally wouldn't re-chamber the same round more than 3-5 times.
