Is it possible to tell what year an XD....

was made based on its model number. If so, what bout this one: XD9401HCSP06

I think they'll need the serial number to date it's manufacture.

No it's not possible to tell when it was made by the model # unless that model was made for only one year. Like we know any xd45 with a thumb safety was made in 2008 or later. That model number just means it's a 9401 with hi cap mags (the HC). AFAIK they all end in SP06 because they all started to come with the current xd gear stuff.

Timmerk is right. Two consecutively made pistols will have widely differing serial numbers. SA uses a randomized numbering system, but like someone said above, you can always call and check.

There have been efforts on the forum to figure out a rhyme or reason to the numbering system, but there isn't one. Most people are interested just so that they avoid buying a gun with the old style bruniral finish which was prone to rust problems.

i was curious about when my XD was made as well and i called SA and immediately got an operator and asked my gun's born date. i told her my serial number and she told me it was made Oct. 07! Didint even take 5 min. Great customer service SA has.
