Thanks! I'll give it a shot (no pun intended) shooting lefty. But something tells me it's going to feel all wrong.

Of course, everything feels pretty natural the way I've been shooting...it's just when I'm trying to use both eyes.

You know, I recall someone mentioning something about the possibility of being "both eyed dominant" which would explain why the ghosting is so strong.

This still seems a little strange and it wouldn't hurt to get your eyes checked. Tell them what is happening. There might be an underlying issue that could become worse if not diagnosed.

Hopefully it's an eye dominance thing ... But it never hurts to seek the advise of an expert.

Yeah, I'm kinda resurecting an old thread.

I just wanted to say, Tripp, I understand. I seem to have equal dominance in my eyes. And it plays hell with both pistol and shotgun shooting. Rifles seem to work out OK, even with open sights. I've developed a sequence that seems to work well with archery as well.

But for handguns, when my focus is on the front sight, I see two sets of dots or 2 notches for the rear sight and two targets. WOW, 4 possibilities to choose from.

I feel for you, and I've had the same expereince that most people you talk to about the problem have no understanding of it.

What I've done is to practice, practice, practice. Now, when I bring my gun up, it tends to come to the right place and is nearly centered on the correct sight picture. If I lay off shooting and practicing bringing my gun up, I find I'm right back to square one.

Thought I might try to be of some help here as well. I have been shooting since I was 12 or so(30 now) and I have always been cross-dominant. I can throw, read, write, bat, left or right but shooting anything other than a shotgun lefty has always been uncomfortable for me.

When you see ghosting it is because you are shifting dominance between your left and right eye. Just to give you an idea of what I mean have you ever tried to look into your significant others eyes up close? You either have a blurry face or you catch yourself shifting from looking at her/his left or right eye only. Same thing happens when you try to shoot being cross dominant. Your left eye is picking up everything but your right eye is trying to tell your brain that it has a better view and trying to take over, then the left eye fights back. Kind of becomes a tug of war for your eyes if that makes sense.

For shooting a handgun for a cross dominant person the BEST alternative is to tilt your head. Start off with just the right eye open, holding the gun out in position to fire. Now slowly tilt your head to the right until you loose the front sight in your right eye. Now once you can not see the front sight out of your right eye open the left and you should have a nice sight picture. From here on out you now know what position your head needs to be in. Once you practice it a bit it will become second nature and everytime you bring your gun up your head will tilt and you will be able to aquire a nice sight picture very quickly.

Even if you still get a ghost image of the rears you will only see one front. Now since you only have one obviously correct front site from feel alone you will be able to tell which of the rear sight images you are seeing is real because in order to line up the front sight into the false rears you would have to move the gun to an obviously wrong angle.

On a side note the one good thing to being cross dominant, well for me at least, I can use a rifle with a magnified optic for close up work just as easy an an Aimpoint. with both eyes open the left eye takes over and sees the clear target and the right eye superimposes a blurry but still useable cross hair, dot, chevron, ect.. over what the left eye sees. So I can open both for a 20' shot and quickly close the left and take a long range shot through the magnified optic.
