I've dropped my XD on concrete from around 3' and it had no permanent damage. There might be a few VERY small scratches, but nothing that left a noticeable mark.

Stop worrying about how it looks and concentrate on how it works. Who else is going to be looking that closely at your gun other than you? Just shoot the damn thing and enjoy it!

Field stripped?

You mentioned the scratch went down the entire slide? Is this becuase you field stripped it and didn't have the release latch in the proper position? That would do it.

You said you bought it used so how is it that if it scratches so easily it looked good when you bought it? I'm thinking two possible explanations. The already mentioned you are getting marks not scratches. I've had this happen and removed the marks with a copper solvent bore cleaner like Butches Bore Shine.

The other idea is that the previous owner refinished the slide before selling it and used black spray paint.....

I've just written to the company and told them my serial number. They replied saying that my XD was manufactured in June 2005 and does NOT have the melonite finish.

I've also attempted to remove what scratches are on the slide by using gun oil and elbow grease with a soft rag. It didn't help at all.

Some of the scratching was already there when I bought it, but some was put there accidently by me. It was just kind of surprising to me how easily they got there, and it made me wonder just how long it will be until it starts looking ugly.
