I am under the impression that the melonite process is cooked into the metal.....its not a spray finish like the satin but more of a cure treatment.

So its melonite along with the satin finish....is my take.

Your Bi-tone has a stainless steel slide which does not require the Melonite finish for protection.

Technically I don't know but their web site just calls it forged steel Melonite Finish while the Bi-Tone is Forged Stainless Steel Satin Finish. Someone else may know the grade of steel but it is different.

The regular old black slide is finished with melonite process while the stainless is exactly that, Stainless. No melonite or any other treatment just stainless steel. That is my understanding but every time I say one thing everyone else tells me I'm wrong. I always forget everyone knows everything and opinion is fact on gun forums. So take it for what its worth.

I emailed Springfield last year because a few misguided people kept insisting the stainless had a melonite coating. It doesn't, it's just stainless. Like others mentioned, I assume the black is just some grade of carbon steel, with melonite.

Melonite is not a finish. It is a salt nitride bath that impregnates the metal during the heat treating process. The black "finish is simply a coating over the melonite treated metal. If you buff off the black, you will still have the melonite finish. Stainless is stainless. the satin is the finish on the stainless.

PS try a search for melonite. You will find this has been discussed quite extensively.

What color is a Melonite treated piece of steel before they color it black? Is it ugly, and that's why they add the black? I assumed the black was a result of the Melonite treatment.

I'm with these guys. Stainless is untreated stainless. Melonite is a non-stainless steel (the SA site calls it "Forged") that has been treated.

Both have a non-glare look to them, so folks could easily call both matte.

It just looks like meta and yes. Melonite has no color.
