Serial Numbers?

A story and a question...

One of the guys I work with went on vacation this weekend, and the day after he left town, his house was robbed and cleaned out. They took a ton of stuff, including a few guns.

Obviously, if that happened to me, I'd report them stolen, but I keep all of the paperwork with my gun stuff. (And I'm in an apartment and don't yet have a safe.) So chances are I may not have my serial numbers to report!

So for those of you who have safes: do you keep the serial numbers (and other paperwork) in the safe with the guns? Or somewhere else?

For those of you without safes: do you keep the serial numbers and other paperwork WITH the guns, or somewhere else?

Best case scenario I'd stick it in a safety deposit box, but I'm too lazy to have one... and I have very little I'd put in there.

Mississippi says that all handguns should be registered with the local sheriff (100 year old law). I have all of mine registered, so if they get stolen, all I have to do is tell them which ones, they pull up the file and *PRESTO* - there are the serial numbers. Also, a good idea ,(and one that I need to do), is to take a picture of each one and on the back write the serial number. The pics should be kept in a safe deposit box. My SD box at the bank only costs me 20 bucks a year.

Depending on where you live and what laws apply, you should be fine if your weapons are registered, as copies would be maintained offsite w/ local LE Agencies. All you'd have to do is call them up and ask them to search your records for the firearm you're reporting as stolen.

I have the S/N's of all my electronics and guns stored on my computer and removable media. I think that is a good idea to take pictures, I will probably be doing that soon. I'm also looking at getting a safety deposit box to keep all of this is. I would prefer a Fort Knox safe, but just don't have the money yet.

Even though I have a gun safe I also have a very detailed spreadsheet with all current firearms and all previously owned firearms (along with details on the buyer) on several computers and on a flashdrive.

I also have pictures including a closeup of the serial number.

If for whatever reason something happens to me, my wife has immediate access to the information.

See if your bank has a safety deposit box you can rent. Mine does and it was only $15 a year since I had a checking account with them. It wasn't a very big box. I scan documents to PDF and burn a CD/DVD and store them in the safety deposit box. Off-site storage is always a good thing for important documents to protect against theft, fire, and water damage.

I have all the paperwork locked in a filing cabinet in the very near future I will make copies to keep on hand and put the originals in a safety deposit box at my bank, and I'm picking up a new gun safe this weekend, I have all the sn's in a Splash program on my Treo with all information about the purchase and serial number and dates.

I keep all my S/Ns and pictures of all my guns on my computer, backed up on a network hard drive and a hidden spot on my website so I can get into it, if someone ever gets into my house they better know my password for my computer and web site since I have cameras set up in my house that E-mail me any movement when Im not home, and stores them in my inbox so I have a video in my inbox even if they take my computer.
