Trust a used XD?
I've never bought a gun at a gunshop before, but I just saw a couple of deals there that might be too good to pass up. They were both the 4" version. One was standard with 3 mags for $375 and the other was one that the dealer said the original owner had installed an upgraded guiderod and new spring which origianally cost him about $90. This gun was selling for $400 w/3 mags.
Being the pessimist that I am, I can't help but wonder why these guns are there; especially the upgraded one. I have visions of a guy who bought it and tried it out and it didn't work right, so he got it upgraded and tried it again and it still didn't work right, so he sold it back to the dealer. What luck have you guys here had with XD's (or other autos) you've bought used? |

Do you trust the dealer? If so, then it is a pretty easy choice. I have bought used Glocks and XDs and have had very good luck. Use your common-sense and discretion, but you should be fine.

Personally, the factory lifetime warranty is worth the extra. It's a gamble. If something's wrong, it'll cost you more in the long run fixing it than just buying a new model.

My used guns:
SA 1911 Sig P228 Sig P228 Sig P220 Daewoo DR-200 Daewoo DR-200 Sterling sub-gun ALL bought off the net Zero problems other than the Woos having a lot of unremovable carbon build up in the barrels due to cops shooting the crap out of them on the rental range and the range not cleaning them. XDs are so simple and tough that I would trust my life to even a used one, notice the used prices arn't much below the new ones because they never wear out and very seldom break. You can get a stock guide rod from SA if you feel you need it. Will your dealer let you shoot them first to check function? Mags are worth about $25 each so you arn't saving THAT much over new. Show the dealer some new prices and see if he'll come down a bit.

The factory warranty is there regardless of the owner. Modifications will not be covered, but in no way does it 'void' your warranty altogether, just the specific part to be warranted, so don't let that aspect sway your decision.
If anything have them run a BG check on the serial to make sure it's history is legit. You should be good to go!

Warranty is for the gun not the owner, as long as it hasn't been fudged up by the original owner SA tends to fix it.

I have heard of Springfield still honoring the warranty on their used guns. I say go for it all seems well.
Edit: ^Beat me to it.

Just like when you buy a used car, get a clean bill of health from the mechanic, or, in this case, gunsmith. Between that and Springfield standing behind their products, you should be fine.
Keep in mind that although I purchased it new, after having put several thousand rounds through it, I trust my life to a "used" XD daily.

After reading all the responses so far, it looks like I'd be safe. Whew! Now I'll have to go get it before someone else does. Oh! How about recommendations? Should I get the stock one or the one with the replacement guide rod? Do guide rod replacements make it work better somehow? |

That's a personal choice. Either the factory or various aftermarket guide rods work fine in any XD.
