Is the non-melonite finish of the very first XD's the same finish that continued to be used right up to the time they swiched over to melonite, or did they make another change before that? I ask this because there was indeed stories about rusting in the beginning, but now I read posts where people say they have non-melonite guns that aren't rusting, even though they're exposed to rain, sweat, etc. That leads me to think there was an improvement in the finish BEFORE they went to melonite.
That's a great question, and I don't know the answer. My only thought would be to check in the "rusty tales" forum here on XD talk and see if there are discussions about a possible change in finish other than the original and melonite versions. My first XD was pre melonite and never rusted or showed any signs of finish problems, even living near the coast with salt water, etc. My latest XD is a melonite version and also has no issues, and this finish seems more resistant to wear and damage so far.

Best of luck!

Of the 3 XD's that I own, 2 were used: XD-9 service model, and XD-9 subbie. I gave the subbie to my fiancee as a gift. She loves it.

The used service model is my daily carry - I trust it w/ my life.

My 9mmService is a late 2005 if I recall correctly. I don't think it's Melonite as much of it is worn off the corners, zero rust and I don't baby it.
