I recently purchased my first handgun, which is the XD-9 used. The way I looked at it, I really wanted the XD-M but am impatient to wait for a 9mm version to come out if it ever does. So when the XD-M comes out in a 9mm, I won't feel so bad about losing the money on the used XD-9, especially since I did not pay full price for it and it came with 3 magazines and was manufactured last year.

Bought my XD9 used from the local gunshow here. Guy said he didn't put more than 500 rounds through it, and from the look of it he was about accurate. Even if he had put more, by the way everything looked and has performed, whatever was put through it before didn't phase it. So far I have put 5000 rounds and so far it has been absolutely flawless. Do I trust a used XD..... unless it shows signs of obvious abuse, then a very much............ yes

I too would like to know this. I found a used XD9 4" service model at a local pawn shop. Price tag said $499, I told him I an get a new one for that, he said cash talks. I got the serial number and called Springfield - turns out it was manufactured in 11/04 and is a model XD9101. It has the old style 15 round magazine and a Parkerized (sp?) finish instead of Melonite. Anything else I need to know about the older model? Should I still buy it if I can get it in the $300-$400 range people are suggesting here? |

The newer XDs with melonite are easier to care for and rust shouldn't be an issue. With proper care on an older XD (pre-melonite), rust shouldn't be an issue either if you take care of it the way it should be and keep the surface lightly oiled or wiped down with a silicone cloth. I've owned 2 non-melonite XDs now that have been rained on, sweated on, etc. and have never had a problem.
That said, you won't get a pawnshop to drop the price of a gun by 20%. I'd say to keep shopping. I can get them new for $418 here in NC. Buying online, you can find them for 430 (budsgunshop.com). Add in a FFL fee and you're looking at $440-460 shipped. |

Don't forget about the cracking issue some of the older ones had on the locking block.

xd-40 v10
I was concidering buying a v10 xd-40 but was wondering how it compared to the regular 40, as far as how it shoots, and how the recoil is directed with less barrel lift? I have never shot a ported gun so any insite would be greatly appreciated!!!

I ended up buying a used XD9, and the dealer thought it probably had a melonite finish when I asked him. But after writing to the company with the serial number to find out for sure, it turned out to have been manufactured in June 2005 and does NOT have the melonite finish.
I wrote back to the company asking them if it was true that they will refinish an older slide with the newer finish if the owner sent it to them (like I've been told here) but they didn't reply. I wrote again and they still didn't reply. I'll take their silence to mean "No". |

Is the non-melonite finish of the very first XD's the same finish that continued to be used right up to the time they swiched over to melonite, or did they make another change before that? I ask this because there was indeed stories about rusting in the beginning, but now I read posts where people say they have non-melonite guns that aren't rusting, even though they're exposed to rain, sweat, etc. That leads me to think there was an improvement in the finish BEFORE they went to melonite. |
