I had this same issue, but after a few hundred rounds it has really lightened up. I prefer the push/pull method anyway over the slingshot method. It works better especially when your hands may be a little sweaty.

I am glad I am not the only one that prefers the 'push/pull'... by that I assume the overhand method like on this page:
Cornered Cat - Rack the Slide

Although I do move my hand further up then shown there, but still being careful about the ejection port.

- The slide is a bit stiff, and can be difficult to rack. I have started using an overhand grip on the back rather then the "slingshop" grip when I rack it. It can be tricky to get the slide to lock (without a mag in place). I guess I need more practice with this. (I think my left hand is a bit too weak, I have the same problem with my 1911 Gov model). I suspect it will loosen up a bit after a few hundred rounds... (But not too much!)

- I had a few cases where the larger (15 round) magazine would not release very easily from the left (but would from the right) release.

- Also, when testing the action using snap caps, sometimes the snap cap will not eject when it is the last round. I may not be racking the slide vigorously enough, I hope it will eject better at the range with real ammo. The extractor looks fine to my untrained eye

- The larger mag is tough to load! I needed to use the loader that came with the pistol.... what a wimp

Anyway, first trip to the range is tomorrow...

Cheers!
Try putting your purse down first so you have a better grip! I kid! I kid! Seriously though I had the same problems with my new XD-45. After a couple drops of oil on the slide rails and working it quite a bit it loosened up a bit. As for the mag release, mine's really stiff when there's no round in the chamber. Didn't notice it at the range, just at home when dropping the mag for dry-practice. Try pushing up on the base of the magazine while you push the button (mag doesn't sit as tight with no round in the chamber/slide not locked back.) I think after a few hundred rounds you'll find it functions better overall.

it was a girl hehehehehe

i'm just messin' with ya. but give it a try, you might find it works. i am a big guy and i use this method because it is just plain easier.
I'm weak
I always do it that way. It just seems to make sense. If I want to workout ... There are better ways. Like you said "it is just plain easier"

Just got back from my first range trip with my new XD-9 SC. I must say that all in all I am quite pleased! Very comfortable/ easy to fire. My shots where a little to the lower right, but that could be me and not the pistol, I will have to wait until I get back again before I think about sight adjustments. (I also fired my 1911 and those shots were right on). No FTE or FTF's or other issues.... but i only fired FMJ.

(PS: I know this should probably go into the range reports, but this is more of a follow-on to my OP on this thread.. When I get more brass though my XD-9 I will post a proper range report.)

I am getting old and have arthritis in my hands so I also have trouble racking the slide on my 9sc. I find the push pull to be the best even though the slide is short and there isn't a lot to grip.
One thing I have found is that if the grip safety is not fully depressed, the slide will not move!!!
I find that the magazine loader that comes with the gun makes it MUCH easier to load
