Traveling with a handgun

I'll be doing a motorcycle trip from Kalifornia, through AZ, UT, NV and CO over a twelve day period. I'll be traveling unsupported (no chase vehicle) and will have everything with me in cordura zipper-shut saddlebags and a cordura tailbag (similar to a duffle bag) that I could secure closed with an airline lock like I do my range bag to satisfy Kalifornia law.

I'd like to take along my XD SC for some peace of mind. It would be easy for me to stash the pistol in one saddle bag and the loaded mags in the other so they are stored separatly. I'm not looking for ready access, but would like options in case I find myself broken down and stranded.

Anyone here familiar with those state's laws regarding storage and transport (storage during transport?) and can make some recommendations?

Better check the laws yourself, don't rely on anyones opinion. To the best of my knowledge, you can not carry a handgun without a permit for "defense" purposes, at least in my neck of the woods. You can travel with weapons to a match or hunting but they can't be readily accessable. Seperate weapon and ammo storage is mandatory.

Drive safe!
In AZ you can ride "open carry" freely. I would not recommend riding concealed through AZ. With my understanding (I am not a law enforcer) of the law, 80% of the weapon must be visible at all times.
NV at one time was a gun friendly state. AZ and NV had at one time similar laws and CCW reciprocity was easy, now that's out the window. try these sites for additional information.

All good advice, especially highscore. Thanks.

I've waded through the state regs, handgunlaw.us is especially helpful. It looks like as long as I have my ammo and my weapon stored apart and the weapon is locked up I will be ok. Like I said, I'm not looking to CCW, but want to have my XD SC just-in-case.

calguns.net should have all your answers regarding CA law.

If it were me, I'd get a Utah state CCW. I think they have reciprocity with a couple of the states you mentioned.

CA unloaded and locked in a gun case
AZ holstered handgun in pack
CO carried anywhere in vehicle and may be loaded
UT unloaded and securely encased,e.g. commercial gun case
NV loaded in a gun case

you can open carry in certain areas of nevada without permit, like las vegas. but like in north las vegas and henderson, you'll need to store them unloaded

I follow Bill Clinton's policy on inter-state travel by car / motorcycle.
